OMG, I did it again

Post by Walt »

I wandered through a couple of gun shops in town yesterday looking for anything other than wondernines and ARs. I stopped at a shop about 50 miles away, looking through their offerings and came across a model 94 Buffalo Bill commemorative chambered in .30-30. It appears to be unfired. It had been sitting in someone's closet for a long time. It was one of around 110,000 manufactured in 1968 and the wood, action and octagonal barrel are immaculate. Unfortunately, Winchester's commemoratives turned out to be less than collectible, in fact they are frequently sold at a lower price than standard models. Although the previous owner thought that it would bring a premium price in its unfired condition, I have other plans for it. It'll be a fine cast bullet rifle and I'll shoot it tomorrow.

I really like the way these rifles hang in the hands shooting offhand. That extra weight isn't a lot, but it is enough to steady things down.

I just wish the John Wayne Commemoratives (and I see them quite frequently these days) were chambered for .30-30. Those are dang nice rifles but I don't want to bother with another cartridge.

However, I have also succumed to the lure of a new rifle. I found a NIB 94 SRC 94 Trapper in .30-30 just like the battered one I have carried for so many years. Could not resist.

Scott, what does the SRC stand for? Excuse my ignorance.

Also, congratulations on your new Trapper! Very cool. I hope you find that it's as good a companion as your old one.

SRC= Saddle Ring Carbine.

I started carrying saddle guns in the saddle many years ago. I still prefer a levergun with a saddle ring and a buckskin thong that I can secure the rifle with.

Yup. Shoot that puppy!
Several years ago, I bought a NIB Legendary Lawmen 30-30 Trapper. I bought it online for a decent price from a Cabelas. I had it shipped to one closer to me, and when I picked it up, the guy in the gun library asked if I knew the serial number was 25?
I said that I had no idea but it wasn't going to change my plans. :D
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

Nice !

Had one of the Canadian Centennial's a few years ago. 26" octagon barrel and crescent buttplate.

I was nursing a really weak shoulder that needed surgery at the time and that crescent buttplate would bite hard, even in 30/30 ---- so in a fit of frustration i sold it, along with most of my other hard kickers

 kinda wish i had the centennial and the 45/70 #1 Ruger back now . Oh, and the guide gun, -- and the ............................ oh well - we cant turn back time

That's a tasteful one as far as commemoratives go. Nice find! -Tutt

I m thinking on picking up a commemorative as well. This one has come up locally a savage 95 anniversary in 308.I was thinking a guy could have the brass plating buffed off the lever and buttplate then have them case coloured

That reminds me of a couple years ago . We had a Hoodrat come in the shop and shuffle around a bit finally coming to the counter and he asked if in his words we had a “G-Lock 4/5’s” ! Not being a Hoodrat it took a few minutes to surmise he wanted a Glock 45 cal .

Tutt, do you remember the Chief Sitting Bull commemorative? Wasn't that the one with rows and rows of brass tacks protruding from the stock? Aargh!

Was the Sitting Bull commemorative in .38-55, or am I mistaken as usual?
I, too, had one of the Canada commemoratives and found that 26-inch octagon barrel just a bit unhandy.

The Chief Crazy Horse has all of the tacks on the stock and it is in 38-55.

Yes, I do! The engraving was OK but the brass studs or tacks was just too much.

It's too bad, the 38-55 is a great cartridge. Apparently other Little Big Horn commemorative's also used brass tacks, not sure what the connection is there.

Tutt, thanks for the link. It's not quite as "tacky" ha! as I had remembered. Definitely for a right handed shooter though.

I wouldn't pay nearly that much for it.
