Hammer swaps

Post by Oldncrusty »

I bought some SBH hammers a while back hoping to do some R2ing. Got tired of not having the time, so I hit up my gunsmith. Picked em up today. Tickled pink. Waaaaay easier on my short thumbs. Grips next.

Cool!

I've had that done on most of my Rugers. Makes a big difference for me.

Happy shooting!

I need to do that to my Blackhawks!
They look good and the angle of the hammer is far superior to the standard one!

I have done that with every one of my regular Blackhawks except for one which I replaced with a Bisley hammer. That was quite a bit more work. My Rugers all have superb trigger pulls, like 21/2 lb pulls with zero creep. They are a joy to shoot and perfect for bustin' steel gongs. Probably a bit light for anything but target shooting though.

These are hugely popular with the CAS crowd. Even to the point where they change the Colt style hammer on clones to one that matches the Ruger profile... It sure eases the stretch needed to shoot one-handed. Seems like cheatin' to me!

I've done a fair amount of lurking over there. Could be where I discovered the practice.

My plan A was to do Bisleys, till I discovered that they weren't drop ins.

All 7 of my Blackhawks, new and old models, have the SBH hammers.

Wish I knew that trick 15 years ago! Bought a Power Custom rebuild kit that included a lower colt style hammer and a complete set of wolff springs. Had to SLOWLY file the replacement pawl till it fit. Worth it though. Now I can reach the hammer without changing my grip. Even replaced the grips with a set of Pvt Schultz grips like the ones that Hickok45 used on the 357 New Vaquero that someone had loaned him that he posted on youtube.
DANG IT, now I gotta go watch it again!

Beautiful collection of Blackhawks, veeman. You have four 3-screws there and stag grips for all seven of them.

Very nice!

I've put the SBH hammer on a couple New Models, like the look and feel. The other advantage, and I can't prove it, is that I feel the lock time is just a smidge faster with SBH's shorter, lower spur.

Will these fit the original Vaqueros? The hammers are sticking pretty high up on my 44s. Those look a lot more ergonomic

Very nice, I know I was glad that I had mine done.

I don't know whether they'll fit the old models. I only own one old model (unfortunately) but it already has the hammer since it's an SBH. Otherwise, the SBH hammers should fit all Ruger single actions except the Single Six family of revolvers and the Bearcats.

I was wondering since there are now two sizes of new model Blackhawk and Vaquero but since my Vaqueros are 44 mag they should be the same size as a SBH. The newer Vaqueros (smaller) seem to have more reachable hammers too

I've had them put on my Large frame Vaqueros and a new model Blackhawk. I didn't have a New Model Vaquero until a couple of weeks ago, but the plan is to have that one changed as well.

I tried the get the SASS rules committee to approve me adapting a Bisley hammer to my 1894 Marlin, a strictly cosmetic change, but was denied. So my plan changed to make it removable, like the scope extension that's included with the rifle.

They got out of control pretty quickly. I've been a little obsessed with Vaqueros over the last couple of years.

Yep, I have a New Vaquero that I fitted with a SBH hammer and it dropped in perfectly.
