1892 Rifle in 44 mag and 255gr SWC Gas Checked

Post by Scrumbag »

Hi folks,

I lucked out and managed to pick up just under 1000 .44 cal semi wad cutter gas checked bullets.

I'm looking to run them in a .44 mag 1892 clone.

Lyman lists a very similar bullet (#429244) with 8.9 - 12.1 gr of Unique @ COAL 1.6800 - This could be a bit long to run through the action. Any thoughts or experience? (I also have N105, N110 and H110 powders)

Advice much appreciated.

That length of cartridge would work OK through the action of my Rossi -- with the Rossi 1.70 is about max: you'll just have to see how this fits through the m92. I like Unique for nice moderate velocity loads and the H110 for maximizing velocities. I don't have experience with the Norma powders.

Thanks Earlmck.

I was thinking a decent bit of Unique would do a decent job of some thump against the shoulder but not be too harsh.

Just to be clear, N105 and N110 are actually Vihtavouri powders.

Thanks a lot.

Ha! Exposes my knowledge level! I've occasionally seen Norma here but I don't think they allow Vihtavouri into Oregon. My wildest powder experimentation has been buying a jug of Universal instead of Unique (got a good deal on it at the time).

I fancy trying universal as not a huge fan of how unique measures.

Norma is supposed to be good stuff.

I find it interesting that for an equal powder charge, 429244 bullets are quite a bit slower than 429421 bullets.

If the loads are too long for your particular gun, theres a couple ways to alleviate it, one is of course to load them in 44 spl cases. The Lyman 429421 255 gr is too long for regular 92s in mag cases, but fine in spl cases.

The other is theres a triangular cartridge stop on the carrier(commonly called lifter) that can be carefully cut back to allow the cartridge to come back a bit furtherm but care should be taken.
