Levergun barrrel relining

Post by Crazy Horse »

I have an old marlin 1893 in 32-40. The action is super tight but the barrel is shot out and pitted beyond help. I was think of doing a barrel liner. Has anyone got any advice or suggestions on who to get to do it? I already have 32-40 dies, brass and bullets.

Guys on the Muzzle Loader forum swear by a barrel man named Bobby Hoyt 1-717-642-6696.
I don't know if he does more modern guns.

On lever guns John Taylor is highly recommended ,he uses TJ's hammer forged liners. Prices have recently went up . 1876 I had quoted recently $550 plus shipping .

Abouther quote was Wayne York from Oregon $400 plus shipping for standard liners.

I can do it myself but cost for me :

$225 liner
$70 - $150 reamer ,rent/buy
$50 headspace gage
$140 liner drill
$565 if I do it myself

John Taylor is highly recommended but he told me little over a week ago he's not taking anymore work until he gets caught up. He said to check back in 3 months.

Hoyt does cartridge guns too and his prices are better than the one quoted above. Work is first class. He lined a damascus 12 gauge double for me a few years back for $250 for both barrels with chokes. He has done 6 barrels for me, 4 of which are muzzleloaders and he had to lengthen 2 of those.

Do you have Hoyt's email address so I can contact him about a barrel liner?

If you get a hold of him be sure to provide any details/ quote . I would be interested in what he tells you .
Be sure to ask if the liners are black powder rated only ?

John Taylor uses the best liners out there made by TJ's and are hammer forged chromoly. You use smokeless or black powder .

I've used both guys, and I would recommend Bobby Hoyt over others. Not going to publicly disparage others, but one other's reline cost me $700 to fix an off center liner that was out .011"!

R. A. (Bobby) Hoyt
Freischutz Shop
2379 Mt Hope Rd.
Fairfield, PA 17320-9756
(717) 642-6696

He does not do e-mail or have a web site. If you call do so early in the AM as once the shop is up and running no one will answer the phone.

I've been very happy with work done by John Taylor but I haven't had a barrel relined by him.
