new addition to my little 99 collection

Post by Kenworth71 »

Hello all, hope everyone in the US had a great independence day, just wanted to show my new addition to my 99 collection, i have a soft spot for them, it started with my dad's 308, honestly his favorite was an 88 in 308, but he wore the barrel out and bought a 99, the new one is a 243, others bottom to top, 303 savage, 284 win, 30-30 win, dads 308, and a 300 savage

.
Now that's a beautiful set of Savages.... 8)

(...almost as beautiful as my set of Ruger 96's in 17 HMR, 22 LR, 22 WRM, and 44 Mag.... ... Hey maybe in 90 more years the 1990's-made Rugers WILL be 'collectibles, too... )

I really like the idea of a Savage 99 but as I think back, I’ve never owned one!

I'd like a light carbine, but in .308 without the detachable box magazine.

Very Nice. If the 99 had been brought out today it would have been revolutionary in it's design . One of My Old friends now passed had a bedroom lined with gun racks full of 99's . He was crazy about them.

.243 is one of the finest cartridges ever developed. Flat shooting and extremely versatile; the .243 is great for everything from small game to deer sized game out to pretty long distances.

first deer, on Mogollon Rim in Zane Gray country, was with Mod 99 243. Literally blew the lungs out the exit hole of the little buck. Also shot the wolf that was stalking me from my port 6. But it ran off. lost the blood trail. exciting day for my First Hunting Trip.

P.S. the adults were skunked. I think Dad never got over it. Laugh? Cry?

with thanks giving

The ruger 96 is a realy nice rifle , I have no idea why ruger stopped making them, they are hard to find, I don't think I have ever seen one come up, people don't seem to get rid of them , nice collection AJMD429!

According to McPherson, Savage did flirt with making new ones, but all the original people who made them were gone from the company and I think they even lost the plans, so it wasn't really feasible anymore. Such a pity. Nice collection, the octagon barrel I think is rare, really like that 284. -Tutt

I have a friend who is a factory shooter for Savage and he told me they were planning on simply reverse engineering a 99, so plans weren't a stumbling point. But cost was! They said the Savage 99 was such a costly action to build today that they scrapped the plan based on what they'd need to ask, and how few they thought they'd sell at the high price.

It does look pretty complicated, even more so then a Model '88 Winchester! -Tutt
