Wild Hogs & 1876 Winchester 50-95wcf

Post by Dusty Texian »

Keeping the Wild hog population down on the ranch is a never ending job . Most times I use a rifle more suited for Predator Control . Every once in a while the Old 1876 rifles are used just because ! It's no secret amongst my friends I am a fan of all things 1876 Winchester and use them all ( all four chamberings ) . Although the 50-95 wcf is a very cool cartridge and certainly can handle the task , it's one I only use on rare occasions . Here is a pic of it used to take a good eating size sow a few yrs. back .

Nicely done and great rifle. I recently saw a 100lb sow nursing four in the middle of the road. Three back and one red\white. Later the same day saw a humongous bobcat all gold with no spots Biggest bobcat I ever saw, feeding hard on little pigs and turkeys no doubt.

Thanks Pard , where about are you ? Hope you get that cat after it fills up on piglets . The pullets don't have a chance . It's the coyote's that are running the roost over here .

DT, I'm out in W. McCullough county. As for the big cat, there are pigs and turkeys enough for all and have been since the 70s that I know of.

I was easy on them today, had the 22 after them, no wind this morning
243 with a 58 gr Vmax around 3500 fps in a 99 leaves very little for the vultures

Dusty,

My Friend, you 'really' had to use a 50/95 on that tiny little piglet. :?

Always like the original reloading tools.

Keep up the good work of keeping the wild boar population down. They say that they are moving into the southern part of my state.

BRS Ol Pard , that thing wasn't big , but it was extra ugly and needed that big gun ! You know what they say about Wild Hogs if ya ain't got um , your about to ! The 50-95 wcf original mold and Tong tool are something not seen everyday . The set is in excellent condition for their age .

No wild hogs yet, but I really like that 50-95 express.
Thats the caliber I had been thinking of chambering that orphaned 1876 action I have in.
Had even toyed with making extra heavy octagon barrel version .
My project is very ambitious ,just got to get motivated.
Your threads on the 76 are helping.

Rebuilding the 1876 Winchester is surely a worthwhile project . I have done a few from stripped down receivers and some just replacing bad / missing or just worn out parts . The only Extra Heavy barrel gun I have is a 3rd Model Extra Heavy 45-75 wcf that an old friend who lived on the Border all his life had owned since he was a kid . He knew I really liked it and that I would give it a good home . As he neared the end he made sure that it came home with me . The wood was battered beyond usefulness and the old barrel was almost a smooth bore . I restocked and re barreled the old gun . Winchesterbarrels .com made me a replacement barrel in 45-75 wcf Extra Heavy . I just cleaned the action and put it all back together . Every time I take it out shooting I think of my old Amigo . If you take a look at Winchesterbarrels .com home page it's my old rifle at the bottom of their page . Good luck with your project , I look forward to see your progress when you get started .

Yeah I talked to Bob over at Winchester barrels a while back ,looks like a good option . But I keep leaning toward having Lilga Barrels make me a heavy and I 'll just do machine work myself.. Parts are so limited and most not in good shape so my goal is to make every part from modern steel .

Great thread, great rifle, great cartridge and a nice sow. Dusty, you and Octagon are virtually neighbors; I am northwest of you now in Nolan County.
