1/4th of the U.S.'s existence...maybe 1/3 for some of us.
.
My high school history teacher is one of those gems you stumble upon but don't really realize until later. She taught concepts instead of memorizing isolated facts for regurgitation on standardized tests.
She and I have kept in touch, and when we were remarking how much had changed since I was a kid, she reminded me that I have been alive for over a fourth of the time the United States has existed.....at first I was like, "huh...?" but she was right.
I countered with the realization that she has been alive for over a third of the time the U.S. has existed (I tried to make it sound like reverence for wisdom with just a gentle sprinkle of 'you are so old' mixed in to annoy her).
I'll bet many of those here on the forum are likewise 'experienced'.
It does lend perspective; then you get these college age snowflakes who think they know everything about how the world should run, and they've not yet been around even one twelfth the time the U.S. has existed.....plus it is doubtful anyone even tried to teach them decent U.S. history.
Without a grasp of history you don't have a map, and without religious faith you don't have a compass. No wonder things are so messed up.

You are spot on. I am 76 and can look back on a number of things that are unknown or alien to too many. One thing that I have observed today, is that political ideas or theory are taken as religious dogma and there is no changing or alteration of that even if the theory or idea is or was in the past a total failure or unworkable.
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Not everyone gains wisdom with age and experience. Some people just get older without having anything to show for their time lived.

Yes to the last to posts. Remember the saying: "If you're young and not liberal, you may not have a heart. But if you're old and not conservative, you definitely have no brains!" That pretty much sums it up.

A couple bits on why lack of a religious faith leads to mental illness.

Gives the phrase "youall need Jesus" a whole new perspective. I know that I need Him daily.
