SR4759?
Hi fellas, never used this powder. On the charts looks similar rate to 2400 but I dont see it on hodgons reloading data for 357 or 44. Is it obsolete maybe or just not suitable
Re: SR4759?
It’s no longer available . I’ve used it in the 45-70 and 30-30 for cast bullet loads .

Gone the way of the dodo. If you need a replacement Accurate 5744 is a good alternative. If you need reloading recipes the Lyman cast bullet handbook still lists it.

Great powder, but since it's not made I'd never start using it, even if I found a couple pounds cheap. But for those who still have some, finding more is like finding gold! I've still got a few one pound cans, and an unopened keg.

You might be sorry! If you like it as much as most did, once it's gone you're gonna cry.

Re: SR4759?
Both are often cited as "black powder replacements" I believe due to the pressure curve being similar and felt to be safe by many.
If you look for black powder replacement threads by KirkD on this forum there is a wealth of information along that line.

Re: SR4759?
I used SR4759 in the first Marlin 1895CB I purchased . I cast a bunch of the Gould 330 grain PB HP bullets sized at .459” and pushed with 31.5 grains of SR4759 . A big butter ball buck waddled up to a scent rag I had hanging 20 yards from the tree I was perched in . I took aim thru the Lyman tang sight , squeezed the trigger and at the boom of the gun old fatty was floorboarded right there . One entrance hole two exit holes .

Re: SR4759?
IMR 4198, or H4198 are both much better choices than 4759 for BP. And in most cases my IMR 4198 loads are lower pressure than BP is. My loads for .40-65, and .40-70SS are around 11,000 psi chamber. A lot lower and safer than 4759 I use, and not the quick pressure spike so many smokeless powders have.
Pressure is only part of the equation, and how fast it spikes to the pressure is a big concern with BP era rifles.
