Portable Refrigerator

Post by jeepnik »

Question for the group. I'm looking for a small compressor type, portable refrigerator. I'm looking for something that is both AC/DC. Frankly, I've seen prices from less than $200 to well over $1000. Do any of you have such critters or have used them in the past? Recommendations?

I had one years ago, about 2.5 cu ft and AC/DC. Hopefully they have gotten better. It cooled, but really didn't make things super cold - particularly when running on DC power from a truck cigarette lighter plug. And it was a power hungry son of a gun.

Again, this was about ten years ago. Hopefully they are more efficient and higher performance today.

I had one of these, a small one, in my Alaskan Camper.
Spendy, but I never turned it off in two years so I could keep the battery exercised. The camper had a large 12V battery and 2x4 foot solar panel and controller. I would do this combo again in a heartbeat if I ever had to go off grid.

Those look great, but are larger than I'm looking for. I want something I can toss in the backseat of my pickup.

My brother is loaning us one he bought when he was doing over the road trucking. I've not picked it up yet, but it fits the description you give. I'll see if I can remember to grab a pic of it when we're over there later today. Saturday he brought it to my mom's b-day celebration. It kept three quarts of icecream fairly solid, much better than a regular ice chest would have done. I'm not sure about temp regulation on it as I've simply not looked it over that much, but my understanding is that it should work just fine for keeping drinks nice and cold on the road as well as preserving sandwich materials as well.
