Lyman Cast Bullet Manual, 4th Ed. [2010]

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

On pg 124 of Colt's Single Action Army, by Dave Scoville, the author states that Lyman published loading data for the 270SAA bullet in their Lyman Cast Bullet Manual, 4th Ed. [2010] in the .45 Colt section.

If anyone has a copy of this manual, would you please send me a photo of the entry for this bullet?

Thank you!

I guess I am pushing these too hard for a SAA. I'm using 8.5 gr of Unique and seating the bullet deep to fit the FA 97 chambers.

I sure wish I could find my chronograph.;-)

This is how a bullet should fit a cylinder!

Indeed! That and maybe a 10* forcing cone might help! -Tutt

270 grains of lead at ~800 fps is not magnum anything level. BUT--- it probably is plenty for stopping most 2 legged threats. I am not going to volunteer to be the one shot by those loads Lyman lists.

I reckon with that soft flat bullet, it is a lot better than that old 230 gr FMJ at 830 fps.

Yes it is. That's Terry Murbach's old Colt.

Even at 825 fps, 6.7 gr 231, a 270SAA punches right through a 4x4 treated landscape timber.

Really cool picture Scott, thanks! There is just something that inherently looks right with that bullet and cartridge! I looked up the date of manufacture of your gun, yours shipped in 2010 while mine was 2002. -Tutt

This is the third one I have owned. I donated one to the Shootists drawing and won another one just like it in that same drawing.

I sent the one I won to Dustin Linebaugh for some sixgun work. (I reckon he musta sold it and the base gun I gave him as I never got anything back from him.)

I'm going to hold onto this one. A little heavy but it really shoots.

Those holes in the landscape timber look very clean. That is not a bullet that is stopped by much from the looks of those holes. Just a guess, but they should be good medicine for wild pigs. At that velocity, recoil should be a push or shove instead of a fast kick.
