38-56--anyone have one? Want info on it

Post by Rockrat »

Thinking of re-chambering a High Wall in 375 Win, to 38-56. Whoever cut the chamber must not have cleaned the reamer very well and there are a couple gouges in the chamber. Figure a 38-56 would clean things up. Are dies even fairly available and trying to find someone with a reamer might even tougher.

Thanks

I've owned a couple in .38-56 on old Marlin 1895's. I love the cartridge, although I don't own one currently. My dies are C&H4D and they're the most reasonably priced dies around these days. Takes awhile to get them lately, but worth the wait.
4-D Reamer Rentals has the .38-56 reamers to rent, so you don't need to buy an expensive reamer you'll maybe never use again. I rent from them, and always great reamers that are new or like new.

Leroy Merz sold me a rather nice circa 1897 Marlin 1895 in 38-56 about twelve years ago . Never shot any jacketed in it but shot plenty bullets I cast in it at paper , silhouettes and a couple unsuspecting 🦌 . This cartridge the 40-65 and 444 have to be my three most favorite leveraction cartridges .

If you’re not after something traditional, take a look at the 375 Renner.

To chamber you need a 375H&H reamer and the dies are shortened 375H&H dies, so it’s fairly easy to make and load for.
