Lunar Eclipse

Post by JimT »

I enjoyed watching the lunar eclipse last night. Don't always get a chance to see one of these when it happens and last night here was calm and clear. I do not have a good camera and my pictures are poor but they show the progression of the shadow of the earth on to the moon.

I couldn't get a photo once it was fully in the earth's shadow. Through binoculars it looked fairly pink even though apocalyptic preachers called it a blood moon. To the naked eye it had a reddish cast.

We have an old DSLR that I drug out and pressed into service last night. My cell phone camera simply wouldn't focus well enough for the task. I'm no photographer and it took me a while to get set up and get some decent pics. Couldn't use manual focus as it didn't seem to get clear enough, so tried auto focus for a couple shots then turned off the auto focus and left it at that setting. I found it fascinating to see the stars show up, they usually are not visible here in this area of high light pollution.

The two pics below are from the point of the moon being completely shadowed. At this point the moon was high enough I almost couldn't get it in the frame due having to shoot through our bedroom window.

Well...I had a perfect view of the sky....and then realized I was a day early

Then last night, a storm came over right during the whole eclipse so what we got in NE and NC Texas was a lightning show.

My brother-in-law over in Medellin had planned to take his kids up the mountain to see it - but they had clouds and rain last night. I'd NO intention of watching it, but it started earlier than I'd been told and then it got to be a challenge to get the camera to capture some decent pics. Just wish I'd been able to get some pics like Jim's. My partial shots don't show the shadow that well at all.

I was wishing I had a decent camera! Thanks Paul.

One thing I enjoy about these events are all the apocalyptic predictions that some preachers come up with. When the predictions don't happen they continue on without apologizing for missing it. Sorta like weather forecasters. In fact, I think some of them started out predicting the weather!

And far too many people forget the old warnings about such false prophets. Tar and feathering a few might improve things for a while. Actually stoning them would probably be more than frowned on by the authorities though.
