For our Levergunners from the South.....

Post by .45colt »

Hello All, two weeks ago We went to stay in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee . We were gifted a small sum to pay for a big A frame log cabin for a week for the whole Family our Kids and Grandkids.. one day while all the kids and Adults went into Gatlinburg I stayed back sitting on the big back porch that overlooked a flowing creek. about 60' down the bank was a rotten stump . I saw a flash and the biggest Woodpecker I have ever seen went to work on it. here in Ohio I have seen hundreds of big Pileated Woodpeckers. this one was bigger and brighter colored , His head was solid Red. He didn't hang around long.
So I get home and look them up , and it was an "Ivory Billed Woodpecker" . what I have found out is they are near extinction .
Anybody else ever seen one? How I wish I could have gotten some pictures of it. He looked like something from a Disney Cartoon.

They have also been called the "Oh My God Bird", because that is what people usually say when they see one. A friend and I saw one 50 years ago in the Congaree Swamp, in a time when they were saying it was long gone.
