62gr bullet+Trail Boss?

Post by 1894cfan »

Hodgdon's only lists 55gr bullets with Trail Boss, anybody here ever try that powder with 62gr bullets? BTW, that's with jacketed bullets. 8)

Yeah I made some sub sonic 223 using 60 grain bullets . But I forget the charge weight .

I recall reading one can use a charge slightly below the bullet base with most any case or bullet. Do not compress. I haven’t done it though.

Assuming a .223:

I wouldn't use Trailboss, it has weirdly high pressures for low velocity.

I use Unique or Universal and 7.5 grains with a 55 grain will get 2000 fps, and superlative accuracy. I would substitute the 62 grain on the same load no problem.

Wasn't asking about Unique, though it is a good substitute!

I also have used TrailBoss for accurate low power loads with jacketed bullets, but have not done so in .223 as I don't imagine it would cycle the action in my AR. I asked QuickLoad about your 62 grain bullet and it thinks 7.5 grains of it would get you about 1750 fps and 30k psi at 100% fill (2.26" COAL). Carlson Highway's 7.5 grain Universal load would garner 2000 fps and 36k psi and just over 50% fill according to QL. It also thinks 3.5 grains TB would give 1150 fps, 10k psi if you are wondering where you might approach subsonic.

Thanks for that, earlmck. Don't have any 223 bolt rifles, though I did recently pick up what is called a Kali-Key. It's a replacement for the BCG gas key that diverts the gas out past the bolt carrier and has an oversized charging handle that is used as a straight-pull bolt handle.
Since I have TWO cases of the 9oz Trail Boss containers, I would prefer to use that. So, 3-3.5gr of Trail Boss ought to get me pretty much where I want to go. 8)

The ONLY reason one would use Trailboss in a 223 would be for subsonic . I’ve been there done that and I saw nothing detrimental.

Seems to me I used 13.5 or 14.5 grains of TB in the 308 with a 220 gr bullet and got about 975 FPS depending on ambient temperature . In the 223 seems to me 5.5 or 6.5 grains was what I used but could be wrong .

hodgdonreloading lists 4gr Trail Boss for 55gr FMJ in 223 and 6gr for 147gr in 300blk. I've gone as low as 5gr TB (so far) for the blk load with no problems. I'm wondering if anyone else tried TB with 62gr bullets, and if so, what was the load.

Well, I got a round to it! 4gr TB with 62gr bullet sounds like a 22 CB, 4.5gr TB sounds like a standard velocity, and 5gr sounds like a LR. And no, I didn't stick a bullet! I even tried a 58gr cast bullet, L#2 RCBS, with 4gr TB. Sounds like standard velocity also. BTW, I used an Aero Precision upper with no forward assist with a Faxon 18" Gunner profile match barrel and Kali Key BCG setup.

You keep it under 975 FPS with a suppressor on Nd it’s really quiet .
