Mod 94 Prices?

Post by Drawdown »

I have a really close friend who is wanting a Mod 94 20" Carbine, and pre or post 64 is not an issue, just reasonable price. Not much to find around here, but I went into a local pawn this morning, found this one. It's a early 64 Serial #, and they're saying the lowest out the door is $750.
But my question is on some of you'll opinions? I believe it may be mostly pre 64 parts. The steel butt plate is definitely, but I believe the receiver is also? The lifter is I'm sure post 64, and I think the barrel.
I done know the prices on these is going up, but what do you'll think? Another year or two??
I must say honestly, if I didn't already have one, I'd probably bought it, it's in great tight condition, the surface rust on the receiver only little bad.
Is it worth the $???

Considering the price jumps amd the fact that no more will be made in the near future, I would say to buy it.

According to Wichester guru Bert Harmon, the 1964 models started with ser. No. 2,700,000.. Looks like that one is a 64 model, so not a Pre-64. It's a little too rough for me at that price, but I'm not there holding it. Sometimes they just tell you "take me home". I just passed on a 71 model with a reblued and drilled receiver with a side mount cheapo scope at $800.

While that seems high for me... I generally am a cheapskate... but... if I was in the market and serious... like I have in the past... lay the cash on the counter and make them refuse my extreme low-ball offer... Oten I'd walk out paying ½, sometime less, the asking price... And at that... I'd consider it a bargain.

I'm waiting on Bill. If he don't buy it, I may just try that myself? It's a Dandy looking rifle, and I don't have a carbine. Be great first deer rifle for my granddaughter someday!

They aren't very likely ever to go down in price... :|

OTOH 'money' actually IS getting worth less each day...

So....unless you need the liquidity advantage of green dollar bills vs blued steel, a wad of money will be worth less a couple years from now, and I doubt the same is true for the levergun.

Now if you're gonna compare that particular levergun vs a mint-pre-64, or a Glock, or a Garand, or whatever, you just may find something that is an even better 'investment' (or not, depending on what happens socially and economically), but I'm not sure there's any firearm these days that would be a particularly bad investment, at least if it shoots ammunition that is readily available or easy to reload.

Likely, in the grand scheme of things, $100 one way or another on the price isn't likely to change your life. If you think it's something one of your kids or grandkids would enjoy shooting, or you might loan to a neighbor, or might sit in the back of your gun safe for a few years until you trade it for something else, my inclination would be to get it.

It also depends on what kind of guns you already have; sometimes I like having a firearm that I don't feel bad if I nick or scrape it because I know it's a parts gun or something not terribly collectible, especially if it is chambered in a cartridge I already reload.

I agree with your thoughts Doc! I don't need the gun, but, it's in excellent condition, probably more so than any I'll ever find around here. I only buy local, what I happen upon, and ive seen a truckload of 94 carbines in last 5 years around here, 90% look like ---t, the rest look pitiful!
This one is clean, easily to tell taken care of!
But now, while I'm waiting for my granddaughter to grow up? I'm hunting almost totally local now in my old age, leave house on a 4w, and go up! A rifle hauled on a 4w for long, it gets bad treatment. And a 64, 24" barrel, it's stocking over on both sides. Lotta zig zagging on logging skitter roads, trees growing back, and barrels and stocks sticking out, that don't go well when you're not careful! A carbine here on a 4w is even bigger advantage than on a horse in scabbard out west!

I may get it? I could sure put it to use, and pre 64 or post, don't mean nothing to me,, I like to hunt! I was turkey hunting today, on my 4w, on these same kinda roads, conditions! I may fall in love with a carbine? I don't need to spend the money? Decisions!
I've got a Rem 700 in 270 Win, beautiful rifle, but to be honest. I don't give a diddly squat about it! I'm only keeping it on account of my boy. I may sell it just to get the 94!

:D just we all should be thankful we have such 'first world' problems, instead of the decisions the folks living in socialist utopias with strict gun laws have to make (....crappy food, or crappy water.....dangerous neighborhood, or corrupt politicians.....bribe the cops to keep the gangs away, or bribe the gangs to keep the cops away....)

I use GunBroker as an indicator of current price trends. Right now, you don't see any good 30-30 for less than $750 -800. Then after you buy it, at least through GB, you have to pay tax, FFL Fees and Shipping. You could easily spend $100 more. As long as you don't buy plastic guns, you can be pretty sure it will at least hold its value and will more than likely increase.

Well I laid $700 on counter, said take it or leave it! He wouldn't even consider less than $750. I looked it over close. This rifles as. Lean inside as out, great shape. I humbled myself and made it $750 out the door.

Every screw looks new, even got the front sight hood. Little bit cosmetic work, it'll look like I owned all it's life. No regrets!

Suggest getting a peep/receiver sight of some flavor or other. My choice Williams Fool Proof. IF you run different velocity ammo, git it with the target knobs. The one I have has only the elevation knob. HTH

Am considering one? I have the FP on my 64. Considering getting the Micro- adj model, putting it on my 64, put the FP on the carbine.

If I were buying a 94 today, I would buy a new Japanese made Winchester or take a look at the new Uberti 94. I would prefer a new one instead of a 'frakenchester'.
