Their retort is a neat idea, makes the process easy, But it's not all that difficult to accomplish if you keep in mind the substance of it -- combustion with limited oxygen. As a kid, a buddy and I used to help his dad make charcoal in their backyard. He essentially built a retort every time with an elaborate, earth-covered woodpile, set afire and carefully tended for hours. A lot of work, but great stuff came out of it...

making the charcoal IS easy. i use it for forging sometimes. It gets VERY hot.

gonna finish watching the video now
