For years I drove past the TOM MIX MONUMENT at least several times a month. It is where he was killed in a car wreck. It's on the Florence Highway (State Route 79) about halfway between Oracle Junction and Florence, AZ.

For years people kept stealing the horse off the top of the monument. I am not sure that happens much anymore. Few people know who he was these days.

If you laugh at someone like him for riding a motorcycle dressed like that, then you deserve what happens to you. To me, he looks right for that motorcycle. Old motorcycles probably were ridden by cowboys as much as any other group. The all terrain capability of them was probably useful on a ranch. Large ranches sometimes take a lot of time to cross on horseback.

There is a Tom Mix Museum in Dewey, OK. Definitely not just a Hollywood Cowboy.

Everything I have read about him says that he was the real deal. Currently, Hollywood would not even want the real deal.

I wouldn't laugh at him! He'd have a hard time hanging onto the hat, though. 8)

In a garage in Morro Bay California, there are two old Indian motorcycles. One is a Chief and the other is a three wheeled ice cream truck.

I would be happy to ride that ice cream truck around in my hat and boots.....any day of the week.

I would want to shake his hand and congratulate him for just being able to operate that machine.

Gear on the front wheel for a magneto powering the headlights. Awesome.

Got to reading about him, and he apparently made at least 100 films for Selig Polyscope in and around Las Vegas, New Mexico. It's a neat town, and was very briefly the territorial capital when Confederate troops under General Sibley occupied Santa Fe. If you are ever passing through, stop at the small Rough Riders Museum.

What's reputed to be the original horse from the Mix monument was recovered at some point and is incorporated into the sign in front of the Florence Historical Society museum, right across the street from the L&B Restaurant. It's worth the time to wander through.

Mix was an interesting character, somewhere I saw a photo of him all bandaged up after his wife caught him with another woman and shot him. He was also friends with Frank Hamer, another character with a pistol-packing spouse.

Los Dos Molinos restaurant on the southern edge of Phoenix is housed in Mix' former Arizona residence, good grub and margaritas in addition to the history.

My folks lived in Florence for many years. I lived in Oracle and traveled to Florence often. That was 50 years ago! Florence was a lot smaller in those days.

Jim, we used to spend time going through those towns. Dad liked out of the way places so i flew over the lakes we used to visit. Canyon always had skiers and swimmers, but Roosevelt always seemed quiet and all ours. Man we had Good Times when we were young

I just flew around the countryside over the satellite images, and the amount of development around Roosevelt Lake is astonishing. Must take a healthy dose of grid power to run all those AC units.

The bridge appears to be broken. But it might just be a bad job of stitching the photos.

Probably is a problem putting the pixels together ... Yeah .. Arizona is crowded ... all kinds of development ... never mind they don't have enough water for 'em. Their motto is Keep Arizona Green. Bring the money. The ranch my Dad lived on out in New River has completely disappeared under housing developments. There is a "Spear S Hiking Trail" and that's all that remains. The old mineshafts have been filled in and houses built on 'em. The Plains Indians used to say "Only the rocks remain." These days they are even moving those!

Yeah, the growth is astounding. I've been here since the '80's, just at the tail end of pre-growth boom AZ. Spent the first 15 years around Mesa until it got too crowded.

Speaking of Florence, Jack O'Connor spent his summers there with an uncle as a boy. Read about that in his book Horse & Buggy West. He also described his favorite pond for shooting ducks north of Tempe, pretty sure that's under the Loop 202 now...

when i was in high school in the *cough* sixties i often climbed to the top of camelback mountain. there was not one building visible on the north side, all the way to pinnacle peak . . . .

i climbed it in the dark and watched the flights into and out of sky harbor. the trail to the top now has a "Large" dwelling straddling it.

but those memories are still smiles.

wish i could write like Jim, or Paul
