American Bulldog Winner (update)

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

Thank you for your patience on this project. Candidate Number 4 was a clear winner when it came to handling, accuracy and shootability. But the stocks left a lot to be desired and reshaping them was not helpful.

So I ordered a new set of walnut stocks that took a little fitting but it was worth it to make this a better handling and arguably more attractive sixgun.

That's a good substantial grip and fine looking too.

My grip seems much more secure and the revolver is easier to operate. Seems to shoot better too. 10 yards

I'm intrigued by that little popper. Have contemplated the idea of a single action 45 ACP for quite a while, but never have done anything about it - mostly due to only having full sized Blackhawk sixguns. That New Vaquero size just "seems right" for the cartridge. The bird's head gripframe and shorter barrel round it out nicely.

The other candidates were all quite good in their own way, but this one stood out. The .45 ACP cartridge is a big part of that. Very light recoil and plenty of performance. Seems to shoot my 200 gr SWC auto ammo well too, but it is inconsistent on chambering.

I think I have a solution, but testing continues.

Did you go with the Ruger Vaquero 3.75" model? Is that an IWB holster?

Got to shoot a similar gun this weekend at turkey/pig camp. A 3" Uberti with lightning grip, in 45 colt, did not get to try the ACP cylinder. With cowboy loads, it was sure enough pleasant, seemed to have a good bit more push straight back and up compared to a plowhandle grip. The weight was nice as well. Gonna have to get something similar.
The hunt was great, but only one turkey and one pig among the 4 of us. We did enjoy a bottle of rye and some fine cigars in the evenings and some crawfish Boudan i got fresh made in Llano. With the drought we (brother and my son) chewed pounds of dust but had a big time hunting the 11 section place we've hunted since 70s. Had enough hardware on this hunt to invade Mexico.

I picked up an aftermarket seater die insert for the Dillon that will allow me to seat full wad cutters on one side and SWCs bu touching only the shoulder.

This should solve my only issue with this gun, my 200 gr H&G 68 ammo for my 1911s is inconsistent with regard to chambering in this cylinder.

I love the look of a bird's head SAA with a short barrel. I'm not sure what that is exactly though ... a Ruger of some type? I'm not super SAA literate.

This is a Ruger Vaquero built on the smaller frame and chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. A good balance between portability and power.

My Blackhawk has both the .45 ACP and .45 Colt cylinders. Factory level loads for both calibers are too similar in velocity to notice a difference. Of course, that is what the ACP was designed for. Plenty of power for all but a few situations. No bears around my area, and most wild pigs are 150 pounds or less. I sure do not want to be hit by a 230 grain . 451 diameter slug going 830 fps or a little more.

Went and looked at the Cimmaron retail shop in F burg yesterday. They had a number of 357s, was hoping to find a 44 special or 45 or 45 ACP with a short barrel but no dice. Have never bought guns from a computer and don't want to. Saw none at the gun show in Llano recently.

I’ve got a couple in .45 Colt that I would part with. One is birdshead and one has a square butt.

I have it shooting my 200 gr H&G 68 handloads as well. I had to seat the bullets deeper in the case with a seating die that just bears on the shoulder of the bullet, but it works. I ran some through the Dillon adjusted so that they drop in the chambers and rotate smoothly. Took out about 30 of them this afternoon to check in my 1911 which functioned without a hickup. So I will be loading all of my .45 SWC loads like this from here on out. Theyfit better in the chambers of a 1917 revolver as well.

When I said this gun was more accurate than the other candidates, I wasn’t kidding. It shoots just about anything well. I’ve shot it with various brands of .45 ACP ball ammo, hollow point factory ammo, round nose and SWC handloads. It seems to shoot it all really well.

I was testing other guns today but decided to take this one along and shoot a couple of groups. The other group was similar but with a flyer a couple of inches out that was all me.
