We have a new hawk

Post by JNG »

We have had a Coopers hawk, feeding on our bird feeder.
Now the last 2 days a Shap-shinned hawk feeding.
Cool beans.

Even here raptors are increasing in population. I think it’s because of the lower use of poisons to control vermin.

More interesting to me is the increase in the number of owls. For several years we’ve had one nesting close by. Recently, there are two more (last years offspring?).

I like sitting out on the deck at night and listening to them call back and forth. It reminds me of time spent at our cabin in Big Bear as a kid.

Always liked night birds. Usually much less noise to drowned out their calls.

I have Cooper's nesting every year on my place. Barred owls as well. Red Tails and other various hawks passing by, and occasional Perigrine sightings. I too have lost plenty chickens, but I havent been able to catch any raptors at it. So I am still glad to have them around and blaming my chicken losses on fox and coyote.

Some Owls have a scary growl. The hawks seem to like chickens better than anything else.

We have a healthy rabbit population and then many hawks, owls. Last few years been seeing g those big Mexican eagles which are voracious and known to sit right by waiting for new born calves , you can imagine their popularity with local ranchers.
