Enforcer or Lil'gun in .44 mag

Post by Scrumbag »

Hi folks,

Looking to load up some Barnes XPB 200 as non-lead is becoming a real thing here (and possibly some Peregrine non-lead bullets as well).

Barnes seems to recommend Lil'gun or Enforcer for speed and both are in stock fairly locally.

Would anyone have any preference?

Best wishes,

Scrummy

I like Lil Gun for most of my 44 mag loadings.

Haven't tried it in 44mag but it works good in my 218 and hornet, however I don't like it in 410 or 28, very dirty ( lots unburnt in the bore)

Scrummy, you didn't mention whether in a rifle or handgun, but have some quick data for you in 20" barrel rifle. Lil Gun does better than Enforcer according to Quickload prediction. Not by much, but still noticeable. What matters is matching the bullet to terminal velocity and performance.

Cartridge : .44 Rem. Mag. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .429, 200, Barnes XPB 30541
Useable Case Capaci: 22.353 grain H2O = 1.451 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 1.610 inch = 40.89 mm
Barrel Length : 20.0 inch = 508.0 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Maximum Pressure: 31500 psi, or 217 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 110 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

75 loads produced a Loading Ratio below user-defined minimum of 80%. These powders have been skipped.

Hi Cowboy Tutt,

Thanks for that. It's a 20" barrelled lever action.

If for some reason your favorite two are not available, I've had excellent results with Blue Dot in my .44 mag loads. It was the first I tried and never saw a reason to forego its use. I use a firm crimp with a Lee Factory Crimp Die....

Yes, I like the Lee crimp. Think crimp is definitely good in 44 mag

Li'L Gun in my .480 does better with a good crimp. It burns hot. 6 fast shots and the barrel is too hot to touch. Not sure how it would translate to a .44 Mag.
