He really did have one of the great singing voices in rock and roll.

Very cool -- I'd not seen that before.

One of the commentators on that site posted this:
"This is how the national anthem should be sung. No fancy vocal customizations. Just power, emotion and respect."

He'll be missed -- what a voice he had.

What was his best hit?
Hits, actually. Meatloaf essentials:

I'd do anything for love...
Paradise by the dashboard lights (best known classic)
Two out of three ain't bad
Bat out of hell
You took the words right out of my mouth (be sure to get the album version)
All revved up and no place to go

"On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red rose?"

His passing affected me more than I thought since he was part of my work life.

There I was... (always a good opening)

Playing records on the radio in the 70's, DJ'ing at my second, real station job - first one part time in college. (hey it paid the bills!)

Call letters and location to be omitted for reasons, but for me, the TV show WKRP was a *documentary*.

We had a big time extramarital affair in upper station management. Drug use. Station accountant embezzling (we found out later) big time. More things I'll pass on.

Meatloaf hit airwaves with his great voice and mini-opera arias, especially his hit "Paradise".

For those of you not up on it, most of the music of the time was tightly packaged and churned out on a production line. Marketing ruled.

Only other performer doing something of the like was Harry Chapin, "Taxi".

Most don't know, Jim Steinman wrote for Meatloaf, creating these huge bombastic hits.

The suits did try to market Jim as a solo act, but it never really worked out.

Anyway, his music was on the top 40 charts, but it was better than most of the top 40 over-produced cotton candy.

Me, decided this wasn't my life. Local USAF recruiter dropped off his updated PSA (public service announcements) recordings one night.

Was always asking me if I wanted another job (knew I had a degree), and this time I said I would see him tomorrow afternoon.

I did, not long thereafter, I was gone.

I was very lucky, my parents were both music lovers. I was the only kid on the street to come home from school and the stereo would be blasting anything from Beethoven to Pink Floyd!

Take a look at this one. Prince stole the performance and one of the better ones at the Hall of Fame.

That's funny!
I bought that one on iTunes. It was blasting the walls out in the garage all summer. I'll go out there when it's warmer and fire up the stereo so I don't bother anyone in the house. I'm still looking for a decent set of speakers though. :D

    .."It was blasting the walls out in the garage all summer".... last year I'm out behind the garage cooking on the grill . at around 5:00 p.m. the local station starts playing 70's & 80's rock. . I turn up the volume when the Stones come on and am having a few beers and a great time ,..Momma opens the window and screams "turn that Down" . I says "Momma I Wanna Rock " She say Your to old to rock". I told Her to shut the Window....... :D

Wonderful rendition for sure.

It was 28 years ago. And even back then the athletes couldn't even mouth the words along with the singer of the anthem. Turds then and bigger turds now...
