My new to me 1987 586-2

Post by JOG »

I did a little bit of 38 spl and 357 target shooting this damp afternoon.
I'm really enjoying
DSC_0650.JPG
my 66-2 and my 586-2.
DSC_0650.JPG
Both of my Smiths shoot super accurately. If it's not to rainy out tomorrow, I'll take my S&W model 18 out for some rimfire plinking.
As of lately my interest lie in double action revolvers. I came close to purchasing a S&W 28-2. The finish was in pretty rough shape.
The trigger had some issues. $550.00 was the asking price. After thinking about that 28, I decided to take a second look at it.
When I returned it was sold? I would like to find a N frame to play around with.
Happy New year to all!

Heeeerrreeeesssss Johnnnnnnyyy!
You buy nice guns...I'm proud of you.....the only thing I can think of to "make that k frame right" is a set of factory stocks. Never did like rubber.....they are functional but fugly..........stay with actual Smith stocks...they may cost more but are worth it for a nice financial return.---006

Hey Six, Your completely right! I put out an add on classified last night! The goodyears are functional but real ugly!
I tried the Magna's, but they were way too small for my hands! Especially shooting 357!
The hunt for wood grips is on!

Good stuff Johnny! I love the older Smiths!
I still need a 4" 686.

I hear you! I want a 66 with a three-inch barrel!
Or an old S&W model 28!
I'll keep checking the Trading Post whenever I pass by that way!

I always wanted a 3" K, but wow have they gotten pricey.
I did bite the bullet and bought a LNIB 3" 629-2 with endurance package and unfluted cylinder. They only made 2500. It's not the Lew Horton gun.

Wow! Some of these old classics are becoming completely untouchable!
That was a great find! I wish it would stop raining, so I could do a little shooting!
Snows coming at the end of the week.

We did some shooting Friday. Had an unfired Colt Detective Special I've had for 20 years. Said screw it and put it in service. Too cool not to shoot.
Supposed to snow tonight here.

What the hell, shoot it!
I never see any Colt detective spl. anymore!
When I do there beat up pretty bad.
The same goes for S&W snub nose any model.
There's still hardly any rifle in stock at KTP.
They took out two of their isles do to no inventory!
A few pricey side by side shotguns and Italian levers actions.
Lately a few Smiths and Ruger double action are showing up.
Timing is everything with that place.
If it's decent, it gone within a few hours!

I haven't been in there in a while, but have seen some good stuff there over the years. They used to have hundreds of used guns of all kinds.

Yeah, that Colt shot great.
I still have an unfired pre 64 model 94 carbine. I won't shoot that cause I have a bunch of 94s.

There was one vintage 1929 Winchester 94 in 32 spl. in about 80% shape.
They wanted $1250.00! I purchased the same rifle, just made in 1937 for half that price a year ago.
Some of the prices are just insane! Then others are fair.
I guess it's who price's the firearms.

I think you are right about that. Up till about a year ago, LL Bean had a lot of old Winchesters. Prices on some weren't bad. I think they had trouble selling them to yuppies so they don't have as many now.

Johnny,
There's a difference in price between the 1920's and 1930's Winchesters.....different era....different look.....different price.....was it an eastern carbine with no saddle ring? These eastern carbines still had the post front sight and ladde rear sight while the 1937 model had a shotgun style buttstock and a ramped front sight. At that time no one wanted full sized rifles and the Model 55 was in production at that time with the half mag and the fluted "Whelan stock"....that 55 was soon replaced by the 64.

N Frame Smiths.....believe I have them all except a 41....never interested me......I'll go look and see what I have for stocks for your Smith but I'm sure I have none of the target variety....you don't see many K frame target stocks like you do n frames.---006

Hey Six, No saddle ring on this model. It didn't have the ladder rear sight either. It had a post front sight.
It had the angled butt plate not the straight shotgun style that my 1937 has.
I guess my S&W 1982 66-2 would have come from the factory with Magna's.
I just can't use them. There so small. Combats or target would work.
I appreciate you looking thru your vast array of meticulous cared for vintage grip collection Six!
Just let me know if you find anything you could live without, whenever you get around to it.
Thanks for looking Six :P

JOG,
The first thing I did when I bought my M18 new was to put S&W magnum wood grips on it. That was back around 1955 or so. It still is a straight shooter. Strongly resembles my M19 4 incher.

No problem Six, Ebay has lots of S&W grips for sale.
After looking around on different custom grip makers web sites, Mabey a pair of combat grips with the finger groves.
I guess you have to balance function and looks. That's what I did with my wife.
Thanks for looking!

Johnny,
One of the best, if not the best factory stocks comes from Smith & Wesson in their finger groove style......the second from the bottom, the stainless 629 with the unfluted cylinder has them and this is what I've used for competitive offhand silhouette shooting.
Not sure if they made them in the K frame but it's worth looking before you plunk down those bucks.

If you put the gold plated spinner hubcaps on the back burner along with the velore hanging dice and chrome plated curb feelers you will make a better investment.

What you don't want is the French LaMat handle..nasty.....the stocks from these original second and third model Dragoons is great also but is of the single action variety.......

Hey Six, I do like those finger grove combat grips! I know they make them for K frame Smiths.
Most likely after market, butt real nice.
OldWin posted some photo of his finger grove grips on his S&W's yesterday! Beautiful grips.
I always thought the LA Matt was cool! A shotgun blast when you run out of bullets!
Old Jeb Stuart ran around with a LA Matt on his hip throughout the Civil War.
I guess I'll just get chinese plastic grips.
This way I could afford some new crushed orange shag carpeting for my 73 Gremlin!
Dat be looking dope in my chick magnet mobile! It pulls in the babes like a moth to a flame.
It worked for me when I was approached by a fine looking Philley last weekend!
Later on, I realized it was a 300 lbs. transgender prostitute named Wakeem.
But that's a whole different story! Anywho, my dinners waiting!
I have a plate of Cousin Stucky's famous dried rubbed rubs with smoked greens.
Not to mention a slab of cornbread the size of your head!
Johnny
