Model 71 in 33WCF

Post by coyote nose »

I was going through back issues of The American Rifleman and in the April 1991 issue, page 33, on an article about the Model 71, it is stated that for a brief period it was offered in 33WCF as a special order option. Anyone ever see one of these? I absolutely love the caliber and the rifle and wonder what one would go for. The author, Rick Hacker, states it was listed in the 1938 Salesman's catalog.

I was a day late and a dollar short....long story but I missed it by a couple of months.....back in the mid eighties a dealer friend had one and got 2500 for it then. A few were also made in 45-70. I've seen neither other than pictures.

Saw a factory model 70 in .405 Winchester advertised and they claimed factory.

I have 2 1886 extra lightweights in 45-90 even though they were only made in .33 and 45-70. "In house" special order.

I had a Marlin 336 without a loading gate....loads through the mag tube...factory prototype.....

I handled a Colt single action in 44 magnum...factory...

Thompson sub machine guns were made in 38 super and 9mm...just a handful.

There's Smith and Wesson's in 30 carbine.

Jim T right here on the board has a Bersa in .22 and claims milk jug accuracy at 10 feet.

There's lots of strange stuff out there...mostly factory prototypes or special orders for people in the know.

Tom (Fordwannabe) has it now. He robbed me.---006

Back in the mid-80s I attended a small gun show in northern Vermont where a dealer had a Model 71 in .45-70. It was a deluxe pre-war without bolt peep and was 100% legitimate. I looked it over closely and had a nice talk with the dealer. He had obtained it from the family of a man that had had close connections with Winchester. He did not have it priced and I asked him what he had to get and said he would take $3,500. Regular Model 71s were bringing $1,000. for a deluxe, so it was not a give-away by any means.

I've never seen a model 71 in person, and probably never will. The 33WCF is an interesting cartridge.

There's a gun shop about 1 1/2 hours away that always has 4-6 Model 71's on hand. Never handled one, but would like to.

saw an ad for a 71 in .33 wcf, being a smarty thought it was a rebarrel... someone in wyoming had it. was over 20 years ago, and not too pricey. a few months a read that these could be ordered during the first six months of 71 production.

20+ years ago, saw a 71 in 45/70 at auction, serial number 3, documented to have been made for one of the winchester supervisors.. it was like new and brought a lot of $ as i recall

also saw at auction [ ? rock island or Julians ] a fully documented henry that was one of three experimental henrys made in 44 centerfire. i think it brought over 100,000$. this was also years ago.

While I'd read of 71s in 33 WCF (but not 45-70), I'd not heard of Henrys in 44 CF. I had heard of '66s in 44 CF, of course, but those were built much later. I wonder if the CF Henry was for a different cartridge than used in those late '66s, or maybe the factory had some old Henrys laying around with little chance of sale, so they fiddled with it. I've just thumbed through Quick's book dedicated to the Henry, and he missed it, too.

according to the extensive documentation and the lengthy write up on the auction site, these were at the end of production and probably the cartridge was about the same as the run of 44 CF in the 1866s. the write up said this rifle had not been offered for sale or exposed to public display etc but they certainly seemed to have the real original documentation.

there is some amazing stuff that almost never sees the light of day.

Right Harold..there sure was and is some amazing stuff out there.....

There were Trapdoor Springfileds made in 30-40 Krag. .....'94 Winchesters in 250 and 300 Savage and 35 Remington.....1886's in .22...I could go on for a long paragraph ......The R&D departments would chamber popular cartridges, test them mechanically and see if they were viable for commercial sale.

By the time the 71 evolved the 45-70 and the .33 were dead commercially.-----

I've seen and held some of the stuff that was in the Colt archives vault......some of the machine guns made in the pre 1986 period would make you gasp but it was way over my head financially......I did manage to get 2 of the only AR Sporter 2's with special finishes...one in full camo and the other in electroless nickel.....while these finishes were made in Sporter 1's and Governement models, only one of each were made in the before mentioned finishes......I also bought the first 2 Colt 901's in 308 that came off the assembly line...my son got those somehow....he also got my camo AR but I still have the electroless one.---006

The nickel one still has the archives tag on it.

Hey Six, I love the camo on the Colt A2!
Looks a bit like the tiger stripe camo used in Vietnam.

I played with these.....there's another not pictured...put together by John Browning himself...I lost the picture...1910 45 Auto...one of 22 and this one was the best example...sold for 200 thou.l......played with a Savage 45 Auto....made for the trials...can't remember what that one sold for.

How about NEW IN CASE artillery Lugers with snail drums...presentation guns....if only I could hit the lottery, but then, it's not fun...ANYBODY with money can buy the best...there's no challenge when you have the money...just go to a fancy auction and buy em......

You want to see rare...NOT mine.....the finest known condition 1911 made by Singer....a buddies. 75 BIG ones

Here's more rare...only 35 big ones...North American Arms 1911
