30/06 govt.?

Post by 1894cfan »

Just wondering, after doing some google searches, is the 30/06 still in use by the military? Got a Win M70 made in May of 1941, about the time the Brits went after the Bismark, chambered in 30 Govt '06 that used to belong to my Grandfather. It even has a cut out for a stripper clip. Wish he had gotten the scope mount that was made for it! It's unobtainium now! TIA

No the 30-06 was replaced by 7.62x51/308 Winchester for services rifles and machine guns long ago. It had a good run though from 1906 to the Vietnam era.

Officially it's not a standard cartridge. But one must wonder what happened to all of those 30 caliber machine guns. Could it possibly be a "substitute standard" for those weapons in storage? Having weapons in storage that are held as substitute standard items is nothing new to the US military.

JeepNik: most of those US WW II era weapons and "surplus" ammunition were given/loaned to US allies/strategic alliance partners after WW II to "fight" the Cold War.
