Could be a young wolf. I see quite a few lone wolf tracks here that are about that size, but mostly bigger this time of year.

A mature one would be quite a bit bigger and they tend to spread their toes wider in the snow, especially when it's crusted.

I would bet a dog, do you have close neighbors or fairly close to town?

Maybe a doorbell camera will tell the tale.

Pitchy's "doorbell camera" would be a wooden box camera with images captured on glass plates, tripped by a short string to a mechanical shutter...

And I mean that as a complement Lenn! I'll bet dollars to donuts you could build it!!!

Hunting on the Yukon River in Alaska .. on the Arctic Circle ... I walked around my tent checking it out before I went to sleep. When I woke up in the morning I found these a few feet from my tent.

I saw a fresh wolf track in old leftover spring snow up in the Wy mountains, I measured it with my leatherman tool, it was 5 to 5 1/4" across.

A neighbor saw a young black wolf in his yard when he came in late, he said it was about the size of my dog (85 lb malamute) or a little taller, and had a radio collar on. When he pulled in and illuminated it in his headlights, it looked at him a few seconds, then calmly walked off.

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

You know Lenn, that could be a big coyote or coy-dog. It's protection ends where my yard begins. I've a dog at the vet's now that got a terrible mauling from, I guess, coyotes. She's been in the hospital? for 2 weeks now. I can't imagine what that's going to cost.

Easiest way to tell a wolf track from a coyote is that wolf tracks are farther apart, side to side. In other words, coyote tracks are more in a straight, linear line, while wolf tracks have more width.
