BLR owners - what scope?

Post by Triggernosis »

What scope and ring setups are you BLR owners using?
I have a new BLR in .243 Win. at Neil Jones's shop getting a trigger job right now and I am looking for a scope for it.
Pictures of your rigs would be much appreciated.

My very good friend just bought a new BLR 7mm-08 this past summer. He mounted a Leupold 2-7x at my recommendation. He has always preferred "see through" mounts, which I don't - but it's his rifle.

Something seems "off" with that setup. 🤔

There are 7 of them here. Only 2 or 3 still need scopes. I prefer low fixed power scopes with post reticles myself so mine has a Redfield 2 3/4X and another that I shoot some has a Leupold 2 1/2X, both with posts. I'e given another 9 to children and grandchildren and they all have scopes that satisfy the whims of the owners. Those see-thru mounts are a joke in my estimation but you need to get a scope of good quality and practice with it. Most of the kids like 4plex reticles and choose variables. The Leupold 2 to 7 is a good choice. And I like the Leupold mounts that are like Redfield or Burris.

I wondered if someone would see that. 😉
The scope goes forward on the rail. I slapped it on there to snap a pic. Pulled it back off and put it away before I realized what I had done. 😂

I move that scope between three rifles. Those QD rings are great.

I have a standard 3-9x40 on mine because it's a .308 and don't plan on brush hunting. It doesn't look bad. On my traditional levers, the highest I have is x4.

I do that with an old Weaver K4 that my grandfather gave me years ago. Bounce it between a couple of .22s.

Did that extended BLR magazine experiment ever work out?

Nope. I never could get it to feed properly. Now that those original mags are scarce as hens teeth I wish I hadn’t butchered the one! That take down BLR in the picture was purchased by the sale of three magazines.

I have a 2x7 Burris on mine in 308. But I like the smaller objective so it doesn't obstruct the view from my left eye when I shoot with both eyes open on quick shots.

Sort of depends what you’re going to be using it for. If it’s deer hunting I’d give this scope some serious consideration. I just bought one and it’s great. I like the fact you get a CDS dial with it (pick your best load and then order the custom dial).

Also comes in a 3.5-10
I also have a 2-7x36 with the lighted dot reticle (also motion activated) on my 358 Win and it’s very good.

I will 2nd (or is it 3rd?) the 2-7X option -- low power for still hunts, and more than enough for a clear cut or when sighting in. But the biggest reason is "don't OVERLOAD a trim hunting rifle" with too long or too heavy of a scope; you'll ruin the handling characteristics of the BLR. (In my opinion and experience...)

I did my own trigger job on the .308 Win one I had many years ago, but I wouldn't recommend it; getting those gears "timed" correctly is critical for the headspace and proper functioning of the rifle.

Good luck!

I have a BLR 81 stainless takedown in 308 Win with a EGW Picatinny rail mounted on the receiver.
A 1" tube Leupold VX-3i 1.75-6x32mm scope is mounted on the rail with Leupold QD rings.
The gun likes the Federal factory 180 grain Powerpoint ammo so that's what I feed it.
Even though the scope is receiver rather than scout/barrel mounted the POI doesn't shift more than 1" @ 100 yds between complete take down and reassembly.
That's close enuf for the kind of hunting I do.
I have a Holosun HS510c optic that is set for 50 yards that pops right on to the end of the rail if I need to hunt in the real thick stuff.
I replace the scope with the optic and visa versa and am good to go in seconds without re-sighting in.

I have a 2x7 Cabelas scope (I believe Meopta made these for cabelas it is an Alaskan model) mounted as low as I could get it. Can’t figure how to attach picture will need to read directions again. I had Neil Jones rework my trigger as it was over 9 lbs from factory. He got it down to 3 lbs which is right where I like it. Smooth as a baby’s bottom and breaks like glass.

Yup, Neil Jones from PA is the only smith with a rep for being able to tune the BLR trigger.
Most gunsmiths whenever I mentioned the BLR trigger turned pale  , started stuttering and quickly changed the subject.
If they don't have any confidence in their own abilities I certainly don't.
The BLR is not a DIY friendly gun ... if you get the gear timing wrong on reassembly you could wind up wearing the bolt when the gun fires out of battery.

I had a 2.5x Scout Scope affixed to my hunting rifle.
I can't imagine needing more than that.
I have a couple 3x9s, and always end up using the 3x when hunting.
I can easily see the use for more magnification when doing some precision target work.

I'll add Tim Ward in Brunswick GA to the list. He did my trigger and it is fantastic. gtward gunsmithsinc.com - you add the @

I agree.
Mine is a TD also with the scope on the receiver. POI hardly changes. That TD lockup is a very nice design.
