Score 170 gr Winchester Silvertip .30-30 ammo

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

I don't know how the stars aligned but I ended up with five boxes of 170 gr Winchester Silvertip factory ammo for my .30-30!

I'll use it sparingly and it will likely last me the rest of my days.

Also scored 4 boxed of .30-30 ammo at Academy with plenty left on the shelf for everyone else.

Some of my favorite! Thankfully I can still handload these. They are used sparingly!

Isn't it funny how ALL 30-30 is good? Ive killed alot with 170, 150, and 125s, and all were spectacular, the difference is the recoil, with 125s being especially sweet natured.

I'm sitting pretty good with about five boxes (3 Rem CoreLokt, 2 Hornady Whitetail) plus reloading components.

I found a box the other day that had 9 left in it. Probably enough to last the rest of my life. I have plenty of other stuff if I run low.

Jim T, where did you find those nickel cases? They're pretty.

I've always considered a rifle without ammo to be little more than a club. I pay too much for my rifles for them to become non-firearms so I keep a supply of ammo for each as well as the capacity to reload for each. I currently don't have a 30-30 but I do have three 32 Winchester levers and I keep five boxes of factory ammo for each. I only shoot reloads and have enough components for about 1k.

Scott, good score on the silver tips.

Years ago I got a shipment of ammo from Speer .. a run of 30-30's that were all nickle. I keep them for wearing to a barbecue. :D

Jim, we need another Barbecue soon. Robert Leahy is planning on coming down in February. We ought to get something together.

The truth is that my old .30-30 will shoot just about any 150 or 170 grain factory load pretty much to the sights and it all seems to do a great job.

Silvertip ammo is more nostalgic for me than anything else.

I have a... (paused while I went and looked) 2 boxes of Federal Power-Shok 150s left over from when a box of 20 was $7.79 @ Wally World, 2 boxes of Remington Core-Lokt 150 from the same period, and a box of 150 grain Silvertips sheathed in a Legendary Lawmen box and nickel brass! Can hardly believe they're all full boxes... but then I rarely shoot any factory fodder!

Scored 4 boxes of the same Silvertip stuff about a year ago, for a friend of mine. should last him the rest of his life too. He was down to his last box and I just happened to walk into a store that had just gotten it in.

how much is it bringing per box when you find it ?

[ depressing thought--- or is it a happy thought ? i probably have at least 400 rounds of 30/30 including my handloads and factory loads. its happy , since i tend to shoot a lot when i get time. it is depressing cause it reminds me how i havent been shooting enough because i havent had time . ..... but i guess its happy because next wednesday is my last day of work.. retiring from medical practice....which is happy, so i should have time.... but....i will miss it and a lot of patients are upset.... but still......

you know as i ramble on i realize that i am ambivalent , at least i think so, but i am not sure, and i..... i think i should stop and get another coffee !!

You can still get nickel brass from Starline at Midway USA:

I'm just waiting for it to come in so I can get another 500.

I paid $18/box. At our last gunshow here, I saw some for $65/box.

I have seen some 30-30 ammo at wally world for $27/box lately
