22/30 sabot?

Post by 1894cfan »

Likely not many here have used the 22/30 sabot, but if any here have, have you tried cast bullets? I just figured since the bullet doesn't actually touch the bore, cast just might be a viable projectile. What say any here?

I haven't seen Remington Accelerators in 30 plus years. Only tried them once out of an '06, accuracy was nothing to write home about. One of those ideas . Is anyone making 22 sabots?

Should have mentioned, have some 400 of these sabots LOOSE, as in not loaded in cases, YET! Can you imagine a 55gr cast bullet going 4 THOUSAND fps?
I've already tried 12gr 2400 and Hornady 55gr SX in my 30 carbine which worked just fine. Was thinking about using 55gr cast with 13gr H110 in it next.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. A reduced load with trail boss in say a 30/30 or 308 might be interesting to pop off for a while. Like a cobbled up 22 mag in your deer rifle

Seems like a lot of cast rifle bullets are bore riding design. I believe the long ones that aren't bore riding tend to "slump", especially if they are soft and because of this are not accurate. Probably would have quite a bit to do with how hard your 22 caliber cast bullets are. I would think if they were soft, they would tend to pitch and yaw quite a bit when fired in a sabot and accuracy would be poor. A shorter cast bullet might be better, I think long, soft ones would be erratic.
It will be interesting to see how it turns out for you.

The ones I'm thinking on using are cast with Lyman #2 lead. Got some Speer 46gr 218 Bee bullets I'm thinking on trying also, especially on the Carbine.

Yup, yup and yup! Got all those from them! Was just wondering about CAST bullets in those sabots and if anyone here might have tried that.

Cool idea in the carbine. I have a stash of .30 Luger and .30 Mauser jacketed soft points that I've been using. But I only shoot it in a revolver. Now if one of those Marlin Levermatics would cross my path...

Larkbill, I've got a stash of the Hornady 30cal 86gr soft points that I've been using in my Win 94 30WCF for light loads. Those ought to do a pretty good job on 'yotes.

I too have a box of several hundred of those sabots....I had extremely dismal results in a match grade Remington 700 in 308 with velocities in the high 2000's.....so so around 1800-2400....like 6" groups....

Never tried cast or lower velocities in the teens figuring a .22 LR or a .223 would suffice.---006

Thanks for that bit of info, Six. Looks like I'm just going to use them up in the 30 carbine using cast bullets, cheapest way to go. Then again, 55gr FMJ going 4k ought to do pretty good on a man sized target out to 100yds, IF it groups well enough!

What i "think" is happening is the sabot must be the wrong type of plastic and is stripping the lands or possibly the twist is too slow. When I experiment and the experiment does not show promise, I stop. I'll play with a few different powders and velocities and if nothing comes to fruitation I figure it's not worth the hassle. There may be a solution.

It why I sold a model 53 Smith....the .22 Jet.....in order for it to be hassle free I had to drop velocities down to .22 mag velocities. I've never seen a model 53 in well worn condition.

Can't say I ever had much luck with a 30 carbine either.....in the m-1 carbine ......I've had a mess of them in all condition and they all threw one or two bad flyers, even with scopes on them.... The Ruger single action is different, being very accurate.

Those sabots you have...are they red? --006

Nope, grey. Still wish I had my 30 carbine blackhawk! Back then I wasn't much into playing around with velocities and the full house carbine round was WAY too loud out of a 7.5 inch barrel! If I still had it now, I'd drop velocities down to 32/20 or there abouts.

Many decades ago my younger brother got about 500 of the Remington .22-30 sabots from some gun shop near him, and gave me 100 of them to try. I loaded them in my .30-06 with a Douglas Premium XX barrel and gave them a try. They weren't bad at 100 yds. but after that they quickly fell apart and groups really opened up.
Considering I was used to my Rem. 700 in .22-250 that shot under 1/2" at 100 yds., I saw no reason to waste powder and time loading anymore. I gave the rest back to him to play with.

MM93, looks like we got a fad that keeps on going. Guess I'll just use up what I got in my 30 carbine. 55gr fmj and 55gr cast at about 2400fps with 12gr 2400 at 100yds? Got 400 left! :( Anybody remember what the necked down 22/30 carbine cartridge was called? Never mind...22 spitfire/22 Johnson with 40gr bullet.

.22 Carbine, 5.7mm Johnson Spitfire and a few others I cant remeber. Always wanted a .22 Carbine in a Contender Carbine. Equals a 22 Hirnet but with stronger cheaper and more plentiful brass.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

I think at some point in velocity and rotational force an unjacketed bullet may come apart in flight. I have read of this in very frangible varmints bullets at very high velocity. I think it's worth a try in your carbine though. I don't have high hopes in something like a 3006

44, kinda agree with you. I'll just stick with the 12gr 2400/55gr cast load for the carbine, should come out to about 2400fps. Lyman #2 at that velocity should hold together pretty good.
55gr fmj "should" hold together at 4Kfps out of either 308 or 30/06 though. 308 is a Ruger M77 RSI and the 30/06 is a 1941 Win M70.
