American Bulldog Candidate No.1

Ruger Vaquero. It’s actually a New Vaquero but it’s not marked that way.

Excellent!

I was looking at one last summer, but didn’t buy it. There was a .44 magnum out as wel but couldn’t make up my mind. Eventually ended up buying an OM Flat top instead.

Gives me something to look for. There was a Cimarron Thuderer in .44 Spl on gunbroker that I miissed out on. The new Benelli is in, but it has to wait until we get home from FL.

That’s because it kinda is! lol. Very handy and it fits this shuck from Doc Just right. I wore it all day and forgot it was there when I went into the meat market. Good thing I live in Texas.

Your next-door neighbor New Mexico isn't too far behind, but the state has been run (into the ground) by Democrats for 90 of the last 100 years ...

.44 Keith loads don’t quite fill the chambers. This gun is really well done. It’s been through Bowen’s shop for an action job. Front sight is serrated and the rear sight is somehow colored black.

The chambers are smooth enough that cases drop out or come out with little help. I’ve only shot it with Skeeter loads but it shoots well enough that I don’t think I need to make up any special loads for it.

That's a lovely little popper for sure. How does it compare to a Colt SAA in size? My understanding is that they are similar, but don't recall how close they are. I don't think I've ever handled a New Vaquero of any kind, now that I think about it.

The Vaquero and flat top Blackhawks are just about my favorite shooters!
Unfortunately, my last Vaquero sights were far off.
I returned it and found an all-steel Blackhawk in 44 spl. that I'm enjoying!
There built tough as nails!

That's the big draw to this candidate. Stainless and pretty much as tough as a horseshoe. I may need to do some trigger work to bring it up to snuff.

The experiment continues but I'm waiting on leather to finish this out. In the mean time I'm busy loading ammunition.

I spent some time shooting this one again yesterday. I’m finding that point of impact varies with where I touch the trigger. If I can be more consistent, I think this gun will be a real shooter.

Advantages:

1. Ruggedness
2. Sweat or blood wont hurt it.
3. .44 Special is “special.”
4. Six shots on tap.

Disadvantages:

1. Inconsistent point of impact. Probably shooter error.
2. That hammer just doesn’t look right.
3. It’s a bit heavier than the competition.
4. It doesn’t “feel” like a Colt.

I don’t think it is. It has a screw to keep it from moving. I think the factory one is held in only by the cross bolt latch.

It’s pretty close. They both fit the same holsters.

Fascinating. Kind of a cross between the old Colt blackpowder/Gen 1 cylinder pin latch with a modern (post Gen 2) latch! :D

Could that be an aftermarket cylinder pin from Belt Mountain?

I think the Ruger are a hair bigger. My new model Blackhawks in 44 spl.
The other one is an Anniversary model 357 mag.
The trigger on the 357 is superb!
So, I don't know if Ruger put a little more work into their red box Anniversary models.
Perhaps the original owner had some trigger work done to it.
