Another Cannon

Post by 6pt-sika »

These are pictures of my latest 8 gauge cannon from the auctioneers online catalog . I wish I'd taken pictures when I previewed the gun as the actual condition isn't as bad as it looks and in reality the gun just has light surface rust on the top of the barrels . About twenty minutes with 000 or 0000 steel wool with Hoppes applied lightly should straighten this out PDQ . Inside the barrels under the forearm etc all looked very nice . It's a circa 1889 Parker 0 grade top lever hammer gun on a #7 frame with 36" barrels . Stock is like a dogs hind leg my crude measurements at the auction were 2 1/4" at the comb and 3 1/2" at the heel . The brute weighs a whopping 16 pounds , my hammerless 8 weighs 12 or so pounds and the other 7 frame hammer gun weighs 14 pounds so this one most certainly is more of a handful .

This gun was owned by a gentleman that had a lot to do with the Shennandale Gunclub in Buffalo Gap VA not to far from Hobie's stomping grounds in Staunton VA . I remmember hearing of this fellow 35 years ago when I first visited Shennandale but unfortunately I never met him , sadly the gentleman died earlier this year .

Well all I can say is WOW....

When working on Parker's I was always impressed with the strength these guns exhibited that one is a Goliath.... 8)

Someone REALLY needs to send some buckshot down range at a few deer! How is this one choked, or are you not sure yet.
It looks like it should clean up easy enough.

I scrutinized a Parker lifter 8 gauge three times this spring and summer contemplating purchasing it . That gun had supposedly factory original 32” barrels which I found of intrest . That gun however was right darn heavy I think close to what this new to me 36” gun weighs at 16 pounds . I’m glad I didn’t bite on the lifter gun as this one was noticeably less expensive and this one kinda has a historical connection to me .

I didn’t check it Wednesday and actually my dial indicator gauge thing doesn’t have an 8 gauge spud . Wish I coulda stayed at the auction Wednesday bid there and brought it home that day but my four leg friends come first and they needed to go out when I arrived home . Next week will be full ! Back to Easton Wednesday to pick up Brutus III , Thursday my uncles funeral , Friday another auction and Saturday a Pheasent Partridge shoot in WVA .

Ah, wasn't sure if the chokes were determined for the auction.
16 lbs, guess that won't become your go to skeet gun, you would be drenched in sweat by station 5!

They sold 8-10 punt guns and a punt at this same auction all coming from the same gentleman’s collection.

My friend that made the ride to Easton with me to pick the gun up and also has a trio of 8’s talked me into shooting it at the sporting range we visited . Had a box of 1 3/4 ounce loads so we both shots dozen times . Sixteen pound guns don’t have terrible recoil , just takes a bit of ingenuity to hold them up as these big bastids don’t balance well .

I’ve got another one just like this one same configuration that weighs two pounds less with a good bit less drop in the stock . And it’s far easier to shoot . My hammerless 8 has the most modern dimensions and it of course is lighter down to 12 or 13 pounds . It’s safe to say I like shooting the hammerless gun the most . My friend that was with me Sunday has two hammerless 8’s of which one has fluid steel barrels and a 5 frame hammer gun which is very light for an 8 gauge . His fluid steel hammerless gun to me is the best balancing of the six he and I have between us . Although that 5 frame would be fun if I could figure out a good 1 1/4 ounce load .

I put my mountain howitzer on the bathroom scale today to see if it weighed what the factory letter claimed . Granted this ain’t state of the art digital but you can get a semi decent reading within I’d say six ounces . The letter said SIXTEEN pounds and that’s what my older scale said as well .

Love looking at them 6pt but I'm sticking to my 16. I've got some does to take from now til the first of the year and a couple hands full of buck shot. Mostly #4 buck. We'll see as I've got 3 old 26 inch 94s that need shooting too. Think I'll sell them.

I've not bought a new to me rifle honestly in about a year and have sold 7 or 8 recently .

Very few if any cartridges I wanna try that I haven't already tried . My days of wanting to mess with rifle cartridges that are a pain to get brass dies etc for are past . I've got the 6mm-06 and the 6.5 Sherman Short Magnum which are both wildcats I suppose you could say but I have dies and plenty brass for both already so they're a non issue .

Brought the digital mail scale home from the shop today . Had to weigh the gun in pieces . Got 10 pounds 9 ounces for just the barrels , got 7 ounces for just the forend and the stock/action weighed 4 pounds 14 ounces . So total weight comes in at 15 pounds 14 ounces , just two ounces shy of 16 pounds .
