Lest we forget....

If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them.

When you go home, tell them of us and say
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.

Re: Remembrance Day 11/11/2021
There’s a scene in Lee Marvin’s Big Red 1 where a green troop comments about how fast the French put up a memorial to those who had died. He’s then informed it. WWI monument. Someone comms that the names are the same.
In every war we have fought, on every monument to those wars, the names have always been the same. What’s sad is how so few of today’s young understand the simple truth that the names will always be the same.
I spent yesterday at Disneyland. Now I never wear anything denoting my status as a vet. But curiosity get the better of me. I wore a hat denoting my service. During the entire day not a single employee and only one busted up old Marine made comment on it.
The Jarhead and I spent more time than my wife liked tossing insults back and forth. While all around us folks had no clue what was happening.
Now even just a couple of years ago folks and the media we revering vets. I thought about this last night as I had a drink to friends who didn’t come home. I concluded that one fact remains eternal. Citizens only care about military folks when they are needed. As soon as the need goes away the only ones that respect vets, for the most part, are vets and the ones they left behind.
So to all the vets, whether you be a Swabby, Jarhead, dogface, Coastie or Airedale, thanks. You earned even if those who never served will understand.

Tommy
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.
Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.
We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.
You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!
Re: Remembrance Day 11/11/2021
I was that which others did not want to be.
I went where others feared to go, and did
what others failed to do.
I asked nothing from those who gave
nothing, and reluctantly accepted the thought
of eternal loneliness....should I fail.
I have seen the face of terror; felt the stinging
cold of fear; and enjoyed the sweet taste of a
moments love.
I have cried, pained, and hoped....but most of
all I have lived times others would say were
best forgotten.
At least someday I will be able to say that I was
proud of what I was....
A Soldier.
