The Sounds of Gunfire Fill The Air

Post by JimT »

It's nice living where folks have no problem with someone shooting on their property. Our neighbors all shoot from time to time on their property. Some of the neighbors run full auto's. Some are shotgunners. Others do long-range rifle work. One neighbor has a 500 yard range on his property. This morning a neighbor about a half mile away was out with the family in their back yard, shooting for about an hour.

I have been lucky enough to have lived in a few places where gunfire was normal but also suffered complaints from neighbors in others.. :(
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

We hear quite a bit around here. I have a friend that lives a couple miles to the south and has a full auto AR. If the wind is right, I can hear him ripping up his backstop.

Good stuff!

I am fortunate enough to have my own range on the ranch and nobody else shoots there. I don't know if anyone complains, but it doesn't worry me none. I've been popping caps there since I could walk.

I can hear a neighbor down the block shooting his large caliber rifle right now.
Firearm season open tomorrow here in southern Maine.
The deer hunter's will be out in the rain tomorrow!
It's been raining for the better part of the week.
This morning we had a few hours of sunshine.
The streams and river's are running about as high as I've ever seen them!

Yea...USED to be that way here....anything and as much as I wanted.....then starting in the nineties the college educated people bought up the farmland and built 5,000 sq ft houses on postage stamp sized lots with "open space" which is nothing more than half the land being "open" for the landowners to enjoy and the lawyers to reopen it up later for more housing.

I love the sound of gunfire but don't hear it like I used to...literally.

Can still shoot but with cast bullets below the speed of sound that are shot through my "giant silencer" out in the barn....

Old Savage...am I OK on the "vitriol" thing?-------006

Story of my life! A day late and a dollar short.
I'll be out there in the we we hours of the morning tomorrow.
Everything is flooded out here. We received almost 7 inches of rain just yesterday!
I'll take the 1886 out and keep my fingers crossed.

Just got home from the wood's across the street from the house.
Back fields were under 6 or 7 inches of water. WOW!
No luck seeing or shooting any bucks!
I saw a few doe just after sunset.
I'm never lucky enough to get my deer the first time out.
I'll keep on trying when I have the time.
That old 86 sure weighs a whole lot more than my Winchester 94 32 spl!
Good luck OldWin!

Hey Johnny! You and the mighty 1886 sounds like a fun day. Just a word of caution...for real, no b.s....on 1886's the bolt is "split" on the face to prevent the hammer from hitting the primer before the lever is up all the way......there is a very very small "window" where the gun can be fired before a complete lock up, especially on guns with wear....

I've seen and witnessed this from my BIL 30 years ago....the lever blew down, bolt came back and the escaping gasses blew the loading gate OUT. The internals were a mess...bent lever, extractor bent up, loading gate destroyed and other things I can't remember....he needed eye surgery but came out ok a few months later.

Since that day I experimented with empty cases with fresh primers and actually continued with my experimentation using cast bullets and very very very small charges of Bullseye. That's as far as I'm going to go.....be careful bud.

Now, work is done and it's time to have fun......question....you have a crib like Jay has? He put pics of his crib on the P.I. thread. He told me in a PM that at one time 17 people were living in that......eating..sleeping...watching a 70" TV...babies crying...but no alarm clocks as no one worked.----006

Hey...you back from "da crib?"....all kidding aside, I think it's an excellent idea......you have a place where you can warm up, get a bite to eat, bs a bit, have a few shots before heading out.

Then if you decide to hunt a mile away, just hook her up and go! Must be nice to have all that land you can call your own.....

Well, what did you see today young man? Was it windy?

And Johnny seems to be quiet.....he is either an all day hunter or he's dragging .....with the mighty .33 slung on his back....oh! and ammo I loaded......

Yeah, it was windy. "But I did see a few squirrels and one porcupine". Just like Hank Jr.!
I see 3 partridge too.

The old man saw one down by his blind, but just got a flash from it jumping. It was up by the north line. About as far from me as possible haha.

Well boy's my butt is dragging a little bit. I didn't walk to far do the small lake that was wood's last week! Perhaps canoe hunting is the way to go!
I'm hold up in the crib with my homecheeses now. Lucky for us one of my 14 roommates found a vhs tape collection of What's Happening! The entire series.
That Rerun gots me straight up trippin yo! Hay Hay Hay! We got us 3 cases of Mickey malt liquor and I'm slow cooking a half dozen smoked pig snouts.
I'm waiting on my homie Bosco, he got a connection for Crisco. I like to brown the mustard green in the oil. Whatever's leftover, I use as a hair jell!
Sure I look good, but the smell make's everyone in the basement apt. hungry! My pillowcases are presently stained from my delicious hair tonic.
I think I hear Bosco's 1974 neon yellow Crown Vick coming up the road. He picked it up at a Police auction for $75.00 in 1987.
There's only 467 thousand mile's on old yellow jacket! Plenty of good time's left in that jalopy before he hand's it down to one of his 14 probable kid's.
Big Shirly says my snout's are percolating! The best part are the leftover nostrils and greased cornbread for breakfast!
Time to put on my Al Green 8 track for proper digestion and wash it down with 14 Mickey!
Thanks for the advice Six!
Good luck filling the freezer OldWin
It's all in fun!

When my one " neighbor" an ex Marine moved back seven years ago , He would go back in the woods at the end of the property line and shoot. No problem I told Him. That's the sound of Freedom...... I used to shoot All the time..... Now He claims to have PTSD and can't handle the sound of Gunfire. If I fire off just a few rounds back at the range He goes Nuts. The house if falling down around Him.... I woke up this morning and He was in a sleeping bag on the concrete in front of the place. it rained , sleeted , and snowed .40*. He finally got up at 12:00 pm . He won't accept help from Family ..OR ANYONE ELSE . someone keeps Him in drugs.....I feel I'm living next to a time bomb. .
If the weather get COLD soon He may leave for the winter. I HOPE............... then I will get to shoot here again . The local Sheriff has been no help.

That Winchester Trapper must be a real lightweight!
I had one that I sold a few year's back, doubling my money.
Today I do regret it. I'll never see another one like it!
Rare 1984 limited run of color cased in 30-30 saddle ring trapper.
I think there were 300 made for a corporation.
Nice little carbine!

Thanks Johnny.
That's how I wound up with this "pimpin" Trapper. I was looking for a factory trapper, I have several but they are build projects mostly. I do have a factory one in 44 magnum.
As you know, the prices have gotten stupid. That was was a nice one you had, by the way!
I got looking online and found this Legendary Lawmen NIB at a Cabelas in Nebraska. It was about 250 bucks less than the used standard trappers I was seeing. Especially top ejects with no goofy safeties. I asked if they would ship it to Cabelas here. They said they would for free.
The guy from the gun library called when it came in so the wife and I went down. When I got there the guy says, "did they say anything about this rifle on the phone?"
I asked why and he said "come look at this". He took it out of the box and showed me the serial number was 25. :D
He asked what I was going to do with it.

I said, "take it home and work up a load for it".
It shoots awesome.

I would not hesitate to buy a Winchester Trapper if one shows up at the trading post!
It would have to be pre safety, top ejection for this lefty.
I recently saw a Winchester Wrangler from the 1980's for $1,400!
It was a trapper with large loop lever on it.
Some type of scroll work on the receiver.
A bit overpriced for sure. I don't think it lasted more than a day!
Hey, OldWin it look's like you have quite a nice location for your tree stand.

Yes, those are the Wranglers, made in the early 80s. They made one in 32WS, and one in 38-55.
I saw one in Uncle Henry's for a grand a while back. I noticed in the pics the saddle ring was missing. Nope.

Haha yeah the stand....
In 2019 I shot a 219lb 8 pointer out if it. It was right where the coyote was I shot today.
Shot the buck with a custom built Marlin Trapper.

Haha! Actually, I bought new woolies this year. LL Bean Maine guide insulated coat and pants. Fantastic gear. I'm extremely happy so far.
