Reloading Question
With the scarcity of so many components these days, I didn't get a stash of small pistol primers put away before everything disappeared. Can small pistol primers be substituted by any other primers, say small rifle primers ?
Re: Reloading Question
The "smalls" seem to be the same height but the rifle cup can be harder depending on brand.
The large rifle is a bit higher and sticks out somewhat when seated in a pistol cartridge primer pocket or at least you can actually feel it with your thumb.

Re: Reloading Question
I was in Scheels earlier today and they had a pile of small rifle primers ( $99.99/1000 primers )
Anyway, mentioned to guy standing there that I'm looking for small pistol primers to load 357's, he thought that small rifle primers could be substituted (??). Therefore, my posed question....

Re: Reloading Question
My standard load for the .357 is with a small rifle primer. Been using it for more than 50 years.

Re: Reloading Question
I use the small rifle primers in .357 loads all the time. No problems.
However, you cannot use large rifle primers in pistol cases. The large rifle primer cup is deeper.

Re: Reloading Question
Thanks, good to know. Scheels here had quite a stack of boxes (maybe 100 or better), so I'll be stopping by again tomorrow.

Thanks for the video link Jim, very informative and covers my question as good as anyone could ask.JimT wrote: ↑Fri Oct 15, 2021 4:46 pm My standard load for the .357 is with a small rifle primer. Been using it for more than 50 years.

Re: Reloading Question
Regarding price, in one of Townsend Whelen's books he gives a cost breakdown on components from the 50's. Adjusted for inflation the current $10/100 or $100/1,000 price for primers is the same that he paid 60+ years ago. We've been spoiled by the comparatively cheap components available over the past few decades.

Re: Reloading Question
Good point and very true. We have "cheap" stuck in our heads in this country !
We want and need manufacturing back in the USA ( or so we say), but truth is - we don't want to pay higher prices.
I experienced this first hand direct marketing my Angus beef. Many folks called and wanted our grass-fed beef for healthier eating, then went away after they asked "how much?"
The Earl Butz "cheap food" mindset is still very much around.
