Winchester 1887

Post by Rube Burrows »

Well I finally picked myself up another Winchester 1887. This time an original.
I had one of the clones and liked it but ended up trading it for something else. I have been wanting an original and seen this one for sale and decided I had to have it.

I am looking forward to loading up some shells for it and making smoke with it.

Very nice! I have an 1887 12ga. I've had for many years. Never ran into another one. I believe yours is nicer than mine.
Congratulations on a really cool shotgun.

Rube, that one looks really nice. Is it a 12 or a 10? I used to watch some of the boys do the SASS thing a dozen years ago, and one guy had an 87 in 10 gauge that he campaigned on the shotgun stage. He only loaded with black powder, and oh, my, what a wonderful boom when he lit it off.

This one is a 12g. I had a clone that had a drop two mod done to it and it was nice but I really wanted an original with full barrel.

I've always wanted to handle one of those.

That's a great looking gun.

I saw one for sale at the Kittery trading post last week.
They wanted $1,175 bucks for it!
Yours look's to be in better shape than the one I looked at.
Congratulation's on a nice find!

Nice looking shotgun and one you don't see too often. Most that I have seen are well used and some were well abused. Good score on your part! My M1887 left the factory in 1888 and still has the "short" black powder shells chamber.
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Thanks. This one is a pre-smokeless one also.

I am pretty sure all the Winchester Model 1887 shotguns were pre-smokeless. The Winchester Model 1901 lever action shotgun was made for smokeless powder, but is only available in 10 guage. If you want 12 guage, you have to go with the Model 1887. That's my understanding anyway.

By the way, the 1887 in the opening post is absolutely fantastic! Nice find Rube!

Correct…. And thanks. I loaded up some brass shells tonight. Looking forward to shooting it for the first time tomorrow.
