Wow! Great job.
Were you in a stand or down there with him?
I have a bunch of 357s, but have never shot anything with them. The little cartridge never ceases to amaze me.

The bullet did not exit however I was unable to locate it due to the amount of damage it did. There was so much hemmoraging that I simply couldnt find it in the mess. I was in a tree stand about 8 or 10 feet up but due to the slope I was on a flat trajectory with him. Its actually my favorite spot. 5 different game trails come together right there and the acorns are always heavt this time of year. I shot him at the base of the neck where it meets the shoulder. He dropped in his tracks and never took a step. I was flatly surprised at the amount of damage that little round did to him. Not only did it break his neck (the vertebrae were completely shattered) but every bit of muscle was obliterated. It looked like I hit him with a 308. The entire length of his neck was mushed. It also severed his trachea and blew all the arteries in his neck. There was a river of blood pouring out of him. One of the fellas who helped me load him up asked me if I had shot him with a 270 due to the mess it made.

good point. a man in Alaska with a 300 WM was charged by a big brown bear. the gun barrel was almost in the mouth of the bear when the hunter got off his only shot. the bear proceeded to really wreck the man with the gun, the companion hunter didn't get a shot. the bear eventually broke off the attack. the friend found a cell signal and got a helicopter in. the man nearly bled out but survives. some people went back to find the bear. it had died of the one gunshot. bears run faster than quarter horses, and can still kill you after their heart blows up. there is not enough time to wonder if i bought enough gun.

so yes, a 357 is plenty of gun to shoot a bear that is unaware of you. but is it enough gun to stop a charging bear with his blood up? i don't know

Big difference between a black bear and brown bear.....besides being double the size, brownies are incredibly aggressive where black bear are not. Hell, most of my friends in Alaska carry 12G shotguns with alternating loads of buckshot and slugs for bear defense

Back in the old days I used to look lustfully at the ads for black bear hunts in Maine.

Doubt that I will ever have that opportunity at this point, but I love reading about other people doing so.

Believe it or not, I've never shot one. Seen a bunch. Had one tear up one of my climbing tree stands. Hunted in great country for some real smashers too. Just never felt the urge. Still may someday if the mood strikes.

At this point, its probably for the best. I don't know that I would eat a bear and I have so many tasty deer to eat here.

I think it is more that I want the rush of seeing one up close like that. I was in the water with a Griz in Alaska in August of 1999. I'll never forget that experience and that was not a terribly big bear.

I hear you. That's what has kept me from shooting one. Nothing I care to eat.
I have been as close as I care to be to our fairly large black bears and a Kodiak Brown.
Speaking of which, my son snapped these while getting his freezer salmon the other evening just outside town in Kodiak, AK.

We're from WV. I have a cousin that likes to bear hunt with bears. Of course he'll hunt anything with dogs. It's all about running thru the woods.
I think it was Jim T that wrote one time about going to a wildlife show where he talked to a guide. The guide said his way of killing a bear was to sit off about 2-300 yards and take one single lung shot on them then sit calm and quiet and wait for them to bleed out. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Years ago in Arizona I had a friend who guided bear hunts on the Reservation. On Fall hunts they called the bears with coyote calls. At that time of the year the bears were in the prickly pear eating the sweet fruit. They would come on the run. One that was called in was shot through the heart with a .300 mag ... it ran about 100 yards before collapsing. If it had decided to stick around things could have gotten ugly.

The Fall bears that have been in the prickly pear are great to eat. The meat was delicious and tender. You could cut the cooked steaks with a fork. My wife made Stroganoff with it and took it to a potluck. People raved over it, though one lady threw up when she found out it was bear meat. Until then she had 3 helpings.

Nosler 158 JSP handloaded with a near max load of Lil Gun. Its very accurate and packs a heckuva punch.
