Bullard 40-65 In Fine Condition

Post by Shrapnel »

I happened to come across this fine rifle at the local gun shop when the guy brought it in to consign. It barely hit the counter before I claimed it.

This is a real high condition Bullard 40-65 and I will be shooting it soon...

Wow! That is super clean. I've never seen a Bullard to handle.

Didn't know anyone else here had one. Mine (40/75/260) is serial numbered below 1000. In Alaska presently, getting back home I'll try to post a picture. There is two fine books on Bullards.

Heading out this morning up the Stress Highway for two weeks for moose. Continue this after I get back. My Bullard is in both Jamieson books as we wrote back and forth during the writing.

I guess I'll have to get one of the book. I'm still trying to figure out how the cartridges get into the tube. I'm gonna have to go with "underneath the receiver".

To those that are interested the just out "Guns" magazine "Old West , History,Guns & Gear" volume #88 has a pretty good article on the Bullard Rifle titled strangely enough "The Fabulous Bullard Rifle".

Someone awhile back (wayyyyyyyyyyy back) asked for some pictures of my 40/75/258 Bullard. As a dumb kid some 50 years ago I mixed up some brown tinted bedding compound to fix a gouge or ding in the pistol grip of the stock. That is what that brown dog doo on the pistol grip is. I seem to recall something about bedding compound releasing at 300 or so degrees , might that be an option? To those of you with Bullards I would caution you on disassembly/reassembly using instructions you might find. The instructions (Exploded Views:) in the back of American Rifleman August 1982 do not work, at least with my rifle. I will gladly pass on (upon request) my corrected instructions. Again this is what works with my rifle. I've pondered having old #9** refinished, prettied up and just renewed by Turnbull but decided it is a hunting gun, perfect the way it is. It might just shoot a buffalo this winter.

Very interesting rifles! Do you have any pictures with the action open? How do they lock up? Seeing no loading gate, do you load the magazine with the action open like a 71/84 Mauser or is there a gate on bottom like a Reminton 14?

Neat! Thanks for the video link. Really cool that it locks the same as the Bullard single shots.
