Round two with the 03A3/ .257 Roberts

Post by 2ndovc »

The groups are getting smaller. :D

A friend of mine has a farm that he uses as a second home and leases the land to another farmer. Most weekends there is quite a bit of activity around the place but he let me know no one would be around today. Sweet! The gun club I belong to is busy this time of year and I'm not a big fan of shooting around people I don't know.

Anyway,
Started early and got out there before the temps went up today.
First reload for the fairly new Rem brass, 100 gr Speer Spitzer and 36 gr of Varget.
First target was about 1 1/2" but that was my fault. Took me a bit too settle down.
Second five shot group was the best of the morning: 7/8" center to center at 100 yds. Minute of woodchuck for sure. :D

If i can get my hands on some 87 gr. bullets, I can reproduce my grandfather's IMR-3031 loading that would shoot about 1/2"-3/4" groups at 100 yds
through his Model 70.

Set up my bench in the corner of the equipment barn.

Just sent my friend a text to ask if there was anything he needed done around the place, carpentry wise, and a thank you.
He has no idea what a morning like that for my state of mind.

Jason, hear you about a quiet morning and state of mind. The .257 Roberts is such a classic caliber. Well done!

Popping this one back up because Gunny had asked about the Varget load.

What flavor of 87gr bullet you looking for?
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Doesn't matter to me. I've been seeing most calibers around here except the .25 cal.
I have plenty of 100 gr bullets, so it's not that big of a deal. Just an experiment. :D
