I knew he did "readings", but had never thought of looking on the 'tube for one. He definitely has a way with a story. Probably every one of us knows a "Retch Sweeny" or a "Rancid Crabtree" or any of his other regular characters.

Thanks Jim. A real treat to hear one of his stories from the curmudgeon himself. I subscribed to the magazine just for his stories but finally just bought most of his books. We used to take turns reading one of his stories at bed time. One of my favorites is where Rance rigs a sail on the pickup fender for a ride on the ice.

Jim, I'm glad you started this thread. It's got me to cogitating and remembering "good ol' days". Reminds me I need to take time to read some McManus again. Also reminds me of time spent on the bicycle on backwoods "roads" while ministering in the transition area between the Atlantic and Amazon jungles. The things one sees while riding a bicycle through the woods are amazing. A properly maintained bike doesn't make much of any sound and the critters don't hear you coming on a hard beaten path.

Flagstaff area, about 1983. Shot the deer with a 4" Smith 29 while still in my bedroll, though had to follow it up.

Bike was a 1947 H-D Knucklehead I built from parts. 80" motor with S&S flywheels, S grind Andrews cam, Andrews close ration gears, belt primary drive, S&S Super B carb, mildly ported heads.

I was living in the tipi off and on for a couple years around that time, and sepnt about 5 or 6 years sort of nomading around N Az on the bike and out of the back of my truck, depending on the season and weather.
