The Lee Factory Crimp Dies include a 'Rifle" type? How is that different? Lee sells a 480 Ruger Bullet mold around 400 gr if I remember correctly. I have one but haven't used it yet (I haven't yet shot my Rossi/Puma either).

off tangent a little, but I ran into some threads on alaskan and african forums pooh poohing the big pistol cartridges. Now not all do that, but there were a couple that had a negative review of the idea.

Having owned big game rifles when I could still shoot them, I know the prejudice some of that crew have for anything that might be used in a handgun or levergun...

But I was suprised at some of the alaska crowd saying with a 480 ruger its a better idea to shoot yourself than the bear. In the next sentence they recommend a 375 H&H or pump shotgun with slugs and buckshot. Cant argue against 375H&H, its another class. But l I am thinking a fullhouse 480 from a rifle barrel is knocking at the door of 12ga slug energy, and it will probably penetrate a lot better than most slugs and certainly buckshot.

Another comparison is the old 450 BPE( blackpowder express) which was the 30-06 of its day in the 1800's. Good for large game, a bit small for rhino or elephant but could be used in a pinch. Some loadings pushed 325-390 grain slugs into the 1700-1900fps level which is not much faster than a 480 ruger carbine... Not that I will ever hunt either region nor do I have an expert opinion, but looking at the math I dont think the cartridge is in bad company.

Btw this is what happens when you are still waiting for barrels to get done. :)

NOT off tangent. anyone who recommends buck shot over a 440Gr hard cast slug is broadcasting his ignorance. that simple. Now on the 12Ga, a HARD CAST round ball or sabot slug is the functional equivalent of buffalo era 45/70 in terms of wound forensics. TKO, is the way I compare. And water jugs are the way I test. And yes I am well aware that now I can stop charging water jugs! [can't count how many times I've been told that]. My 405Gr 44Mag revolver load is pushing up into 45/70 territory, in terms of TKO. That load is running a little over 1100fps from Marshall's Redhawk. And it penetrates water jugs like my 45/70/525 load does from other folks guns.

My Redhawk needs to go back to Prescott for some trigger work before I can get the cylinder adapted to my load. Right now it is swaging hard cast bullets as they leave to enter the chamber.

In the meantime I have an AR pistol upper that shoots 50 Beowolf ammo. When I reload 440 Gr hard cast into that pistol cartridge, [50 AE I think] I will wind up with essentially my 45/70 load with a slightly lower TKO, but still plenty of whoop-um.

This is stuff I am doing or have done, and I've satisfied myself that I can trust my ammo to stop charging animals, if I can stop shaking long enough to make the shot.

This shows the difference; I definitely prefer the 'rifle' type...

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36654&sid=4cb8fd1d2 ... cdbedf7033

The rifle type uses a fingered-collet design as opposed to a slip-ring collet, and is more like a real 'factory' crimp.

'Well I backpedalled on it' should be the new title. Unfortunately I just cant justify the expense. Too much going on in the world right now, including family members losing jobs over vaccine mandates. The gunsmith happily accepted ownership of the project and associated components. I'll stick with old faithful, my pair of 357 rossis. At least until the world gets back on track.

Thats a bummer! I been planning to get a 20" 9mm lite weight tapered barrel for my Contender Carbine but the price has gone up to $455 .... Some time you just have to cut your expenses and move on to something else. Todd/3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
