3 Days of Birthday Present

Post by Griff »

So... Wednesday I turned 71... seems like it was just 50 years ago I turned 21... :P

Anyway, Wednesday I tore down the front drive axle on the Rose to install new brakes... day 1 was limited to taking off the wheels, (have you ever jacked up a semi truck using a bottle jack)? Not something I want to do even a second time! So a air over hydraulic jack is on the way... when it gets here the truck will come down off the jack stands!

Day two was limited to cleaning the parts that were going back on, getting the new shoes, drums, brake adjusters (who knew that they don't sell just the little rubber boot for the adjusting rod, you have to buy the whole $90 part)!!!

Today was spent putting the darn thing back together, adjusting the brakes, and testing out my new DeWalt battery powered grease gun! I've lubed this thing by you standard hand powered grease gun for years... and 3 years ago I bought a Craftsman air powered grease gun. What a failure... While it pumps grease in testing, put on a zerk fitting and nada... this new DeWalt is a complete success!

And if you want to criticize me for taking 3 days to do a brake job on just one axle... go ahead! Right after you do one for the 1st time, in the heat of a Texas summer... OUTDOORS!

the right tools can sure make life a lot easier. AMEN

My 1984 John Deere finally wore out the alternator and caught me without the proper metric tools! After a bit of on-line shopping, I have a nice set of German made metric open end and box end wrenches and a replacement alternator due in soon.
Then I can finish mowing the pasture.

Oh, BTW, Happy Birthday. Mine was August 1.

crs, ya shoulda said something... I probably have 3 sets of tools... one in the garage, one out in the shop, and one scattered around in the various vehicles! Each set includes both fractional and metric! Tho' probably not the greatest selection of metric! My first foray into metric-dom, was with my '88 Chevy dually... the engine was actually an '89, the engine from someplace in the US, and had fractional nuts and bolts... but all the accessories were from either Canada or Mexico, and were all METRIC! Luckily phillips and torx screws use the same bits... even if their thread are different in machine screw form!

Thanks for the Birthday wishes fellas... except for the heat & humidity, it wasn't a tough day...
