Finally a J frame that I can really shoot well!

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

I must confess that I have a thing for J frame revolvers. Especially hammerless guns. For many years I’ve carried a J frame almost exclusively on my bike travels. I carried stainless and aluminum guns but I never found one that I could really shoot out to 25 yards. I know that they were designed to be used up close and personal but I really wanted a gun this size that I could shoot and stay on an 8 inch plate at 25 yards. Now I have one that will actually do better!

I haven’t touched the factory trigger (this gun was new and unfired until a couple of days ago) and I have no problem keeping my .38 handloads on an 8 inch plate at 25 with boring regularity. I can see these sights which is probably the best explanation. But contrary to some reports, these sights seem to be dead on. Next step is to polish up the inside a bit and work on springs.

Nice looking piece Scott!
I have not shot my 340 at any distance. Up at Tedd's place I killed a jackrabbit with it. The jack was in Tedd's garden and Tedd wanted him removed. I got within 50 feet and took him out with the first shot. (sometimes you get lucky) but that is about the max distance I felt comfortable shooting rabbits with it.

I really like the look of that little popper. I've not kept up with S$W, is this a current production item, or someone's safe queen?

I bought it from a shop and I think it just stayed in the dusty box on a back shelf. I don’t believe it is current production.

Yeah, it's not "tacticool" and they don't sell well in many places due to that. Glad you were able to get it and save it from a life of neglect. :D There's something about a J-frame 38 that seems "just right". Pro-series... a term to file away for future reference. I half expected to see "Lady Smith" engraved there. (I TOLD you I haven't kept up with them!)

That’s the model I was looking for. I’ll still probably pick one up, but the 442 is working fine. Just got the Wilson spring kit. Hoping to put that in tomorrow.

I’ve been going back and forth between it and the G26.
Depending on where I’m going.

This is the load I carry and I have never found anything I like better. Although I think the 9 mm is enough, no 9mm matches these results.

I've kept my eye open for a Ladysmith myself, but either they don't appear or they are priced like they were gold plated. I was wondering about the grippystock thingies. That wood looks better, no doubt. How grabby are the factory grips? Some of those seem to hang up on everything and pick up lint like a gas dryer lint trap.

That appears to be it but there are no markings on the gun or box that say “performance center” and it does not have the more recent updates to the frame that newer J frames have.

I've always shot a J-frame pretty well. I don't currently have one, but my wife has 2.
She daily packs a no lock 442 that she has about 2k rounds through. It ain't pretty no more, but it's a shooter.
No question for me, a 3" is the only way to fly. Easier to shoot, more velocity, no more difficult to conceal, and most importantly, a full length ejector!

I've never owned a Smith J frame before. That look's really nice, especially with the finger grove wood grip's!
Look like it's the perfect size to carry when you don't feel like carrying a pistol.
If you can hit every time at 25 yards why not lug it every day.

Scott, if you don't mind, what stocks are those, and did they need extra fitting? I've got a 442 I'd like to put those on.

I don't know what brand they might be. I bought them on "sigh" Amazon. They required no fitting, just a screwdriver. And my little finger has a place to rest. I went back and checked and I think the brand name is "Handicraftgrips."

And the winner. 10 yards offhand with the 173 grain Keith bullet over 5 gr Unique. I actually hit my 100 yard half size chest target twice (out of five rounds) with this load today.

I haven’t changed out any springs or slicked anything up. I did put on some slightly bigger grips. I may not do anything else to it.

I haven't tested it with .357 ammunition yet (mainly because I cannot find a box of Remington 125s that I know I have somewhere). But this little popper has enough rounds through it to make me comfortable with its reliability and that it hits to the sights. I've been carrying it daily for a while and I can find no fault with it.

It did not bother me at all. Of course the 173 Keith over 5 gr of Unique is a great all around load and I use it a lot on the ranch. But I generally shoot it through an L or N frame Smith or an old model Blackhawk. This was the first time I tried it in a J frame and it did not knock anything loose.

I was curious about the recoil as well. I would think the all stainless construction would help a bit.
I have some 180s I need to load up and try in the Speed Six.

Good stuff!

.357 magnum 110 Remington. Very loud. I expected that this would be a good load, but I was not terribly happy with it.

125 gr Remington, my favorite.357 load, and for good reason. I put two rounds through that pear leaf and it blew holes much bigger than I expected. Not as much recoil as I expected. Controllable and I don't think there is a better round for the intended purposes of this kind of revolver.

158. Gr JHP. This load gave the least recoil of all rounds tested today. No doubt that it would do the job though.

You're really making me want one of those!

Is there any truth to the rumor that an over zealous prosecutor would make a big deal out of using handloads in a defensive situation?
just curious. Seems like I would hear/ read that quite a bit over the years.

I’ve been practicing law now for 22 years. Before that I was a police officer and deputy sheriff.

I’ve seen a lot of shootings. But I’ve never seen where the ammunition used was a factor, much less a determinative factor in whether one was charged with a crime. I suppose it could happen but I’ve never seen it.

I always thought it sounded like BS and a decent attorney could offer a better argument. Not that I ever want to test that hypothesis, but thought I'd ask out of curiosity.

This is how worried I am about it.......I carried a SAA all weekend with Skeeter loads made with (Gasp!) Russian primers! In other words, I would not think twice about using my handloads if I needed to.
