Breaking in the S&W 442

Post by 2ndovc »

I had a chance to stop by a friend's farm on the way home today and try out the new 442. Started with a older box of Remington 158 gr LRN that an uncle had given me along with three more boxes and some other stuff. Figured it was a good place to start.
Went through about half a box and finally started to get used to the DAO. It's not bad, but needs several hundred more rounds through it I think. The 642 that I had was fairly smooth, but it was well used and broken in. The target in the picture was shot with 125 gr Hornady XTPs and Tightgroup load that shoots well through my dad's Colt Troopers. Shooting was two hands at 10 yards. Not spectacular but not horrible for the first time out.

I'd also taken along the .40 S&W Blackhawk. I can't get over how much I like shooting this revolver. I backed off to @ 25 yds./ paces, shooting with one hand. just picked it up from the gunsmith on Monday. I had him install an SBH hammer. Big difference!

Nice way to finish a day. :D

That's a great way to spend any day. The 442 will smooth up with use or your finger will get stronger. Either way, you get better with it as you shoot it more.

I just pickup a 2005 Ruger Blackhawk Anniversary 357 mag.
I took it across the street to try her out, after a little bit of oil on the ratchet.
The hammer is so light in cocking this model. The trigger is fantastic!
I shot from 15 to 30 yard's with very few misses!
I put 46 rounds thru her. Mostly Federal 38 spl.
12 rounds of PMC 357 mag.
You've got to love Blackhawks!
Good luck with your 642!

I imagine that Wolff springs could lighten up that DAO for you.

That thought had crossed my mind. I'll see what a couple more boxes of .38s do, but I'll probably order one.

Wilson Combat makes a good spring kit for these little guns. The springs lighten things up quite a bit, but they are stout enough to always light a primer and return the trigger to battery. I got mine at Midway for about $10 as I recall.

I wasn’t about to wait for my 642 to “ break-in”.
Installed an Apex spring kit then took a set of stones and some oil to the internals.
Much improved..!

It's not a matter of "Waiting". I'll go through 200 rounds before the new spring gets here. Wanted to see if it made any difference, all there was to it.

Scott,
I already had the Wilson spring in my cart at Midway. :D
