substituted dies for 50-110win

Post by Montana22 »

cant find any dies for 50-110 win. Tried C4HD and they dont have any and are quite a ways out before they will be making that caliber again.
AM wondering what dies can be substituted and work good for a 50-110 with .512 bullet?
They do have 50 alaskan dies if those work, but thinking the alaskan is .200" shorter case will that die actually full length size a longer 2.4" case?
any ideas?

Will you need to full length size? I have a Roller that was 11.7X51R. I ran a 45-70 reamer in it and the fired cases are reloaded with ffg, a card wad and a grease cookie. Then I hand seat the bullet without sizing or crimp. Works fine in the single shot but you would need to crimp them. I have a couple hundred odd dies. If I can make the time I'll see if any are 50s.

hi MM, yes I want to full length resize for ease of chambering. And an expander, seater. and a taper crimp die. that has 7/8" die body threads for rock crusher.

JFE,,yep you and crs are both guiding me in that direction. And i already have the 45-90 dies. Since i have completely struck out on the 50cal dies I may just have to put that project on hold till dies become available. CH4D said it would be march 2023 before they start making 50cal dies again. 2year backlog.
thanks for the thought.

m.m.- I think the 1876 50-95 case dimensions are substantially different from the 1886 50-110.
Finding the correct dies are a must before i start the project, but also so far I havnt gotten any feedback help on machining needed to accomplish this. So think its time to back off a little and wait till I can garner more info.
thanks

I see that you want full length sizing so I respect your opinion on that buuuuut, I have not had any issues when using my 50-70 dies for my 50-100-450. I am using one set of brass in one gun, it has not been a problem for me. Good luck with your search.

I found some 50-110 dies after about 10 minutes on google! Forget the sites , one price made me gasp, I think it was $464.00 and another was in czechoslovakia, but the brand was listed on other site as out of stock.
I bought mine years ago from RCBS, 15 or so. If I remember the price was about $150.00. I did not see them listed on their site but a phone call might be informative !

Good luck

i think rcbs discontinued 50-110. I am going to start making phone calls and forget about the main web sites.
I do understand that there is probably other dies to use. I think 50 Alaskan could be used. But I am not knowledgeable enough at this time to be mixing calibers, dies and cases without finding enough info.
I cant imagine its a very big deal transforming the internals of the 86 to accept a 50cal cartridge But I cant find ANY info on doing the job.
I did see that czech site selling them for 8000. whatever their money is.

Montana22, the story I have heard( I am not an expert and I did not stay at a Holiday INN express last night) was that although the 50-110 or 50-100-450 were factory options, each rifle was a hand built proposition because the frame has to be modified to accept the rim of this case, as well as several other parts. I just got mine back today in the mail and spent my evening assembling some dummy rounds, so I didn't take it apart yet. I am interested in seeing what was modified and to what extent. The man that did mine was honorable, honest and a joy to work with. Mike Hunter restorations. He is a member here, though I don't see him as often as I did years before. I am waiting for Sunday, I foresee some water bottles EXPLODING in the near future.

bronco, thats australia.lol.

fordwannabe, I would love to know what was done to the internals of your rifle.
IS your rifle a browning 71? If so am wondering if you have the carrier link installed, the schematics dont show the carrier link in the browning 71 but do show it in the 86.

Cant wait to hear back how your rifles action works with the 50-100 case.
I am almost tempted to go with the 50 alaskan being shorter seems as an easier build. keep me posted please.

No Mine was made by Winchester in 1895. I love it. I loaded 20 rounds with different amounts of 5744 and a 510 grain bullet ( I said 520 before but I was wrong). I even got 16 rounds out of it before the mag tube shot loose. This was always a problem with the originals and why Winchester went to the screw in mag tube later in production. I am gonna work on the mag problem and load some more but I think it will be enough for a whitetail. :D I have been working on another project so I haven't had a chance to tear it apart and look.

I have a 50-110 built on a 71 Japchester, I use both the 50-70 RCBS and 50 alaskan Hrorday dies, I use both 50 alaskan and 50-110 starline brass, I haven’t had any problems by not full length sizing the 50-110 brass. Hope this helps.

winfever, you say you use both sets of dies to reload your 50-110...Do you have to use both sets for some reason or do you mean that both sets work independently.

Have you shot any 50 alaskan cartridges in your 50-110.

Yes I use both sets, for different loads, I bought the 50-70 dies first, then the 50 Alaskan, I use both 50-110 and 50 Alaskan brass from Starline, I use an Accurate dual cavity mold 51- 320c & 320e, one plain base, one gas check, also a 440g lee plain base. Since I'm always using the same rifle, I have no need to full length resize, I do resize the length of the die that it permits. I have also used the Lee FC for 50 Alaskan for the 300g Barns bullets, all my 50 Alaskan loads have been my hand loads using somewhat light to medium loads of SR4759 & IMR 4198, I use dryer lint for fill, with iron sights and old eyes I can keep all shots on 6" paper plate at 50 yards.
Good luck with your efforts, and enjoy your 50-110.
