32-40 smokeless load assistance

Post by Ray Newman »

Colleagues: need to develop a target load for a 32-40 Winchester "Limited Edition" M1885 with a 170 grain jacketed bullet.

Powders on-hand: IMR 3031, IMR 4227, Trail Boss, Winchester 748, Reloader #7, and SR 4759.

So far have found several cast bullet loads and the smokeless loads are around 2000 FPS. Would like to try something in the old Black Powder velocity range. Some reloaders advised using .32 Winchester Special data. Tried that in the past, but was not happy with the results.

Appreciate any assistance

LEE modern book of reloading has 4 pages of 32/40, if you have acces to one.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

I copied this from my 45th Edition (1970) Lyman Reloading Handbook.

I had good results using Hornady 170gr FP over 18gr ADI 2207 (IMR 4198 equivalent)

I only loaded for one 32-40 a circa 1906 Marlin 1893 . I used the load straight from Venturino’s book , seems to me it was something around 14.5 grains of 5744 pushing a 174 grain cast gas check bullet . It worked fine for silhouette out to 200 meters and it killed the only deer I ever fired it at . Although I hit that deer where I aimed and it rendered him incapable of getting up I needed to put a finisher in him when I walked up . If I had it to do over again I’d boost the charge some as I don’t think the cast WW bullet expanded well at that low velocity .
