Looking for aperture sights for my 336 Texan

Post by Deaf Smith »

And I see it is hard to find a steel Lyman 66 LA!!!

I want to keep the front sight as is from factory. It has to be adjustable and very sturdy. My skinner won't adjust at all for windage and I don't want to move the front sight (shoots just a bit to the left.)

Ebay has nothing... A German company has one Lyman for, get this, $265 shipped! Ouch!

Any ideas folks?

Thanks!

.

I've used both these on Marlin 336's and 1894's.

The version that mounts in the top tapped holes (for 'scopes') is the "336" one:

The version that requires side-mount holes (may or may not need to be drilled yourself) is the "94/36" one (also fits Winchester 94's I think - both of these fit the 1894's as long as there are side holes from the factory or you add them yourself; some 336's have both top and side holes)

I like the repeatable adjustments and I use them 'ghosted' by leaving the apertures out once I sight the gun in off the bench. It makes them faster to use especially in dim light.

It is POSSIBLE the "94/36" could adjust lower, but I've used both with factory front bead sights as well as the supplied firesights; it is possible that with any individual gun the height adjustment may not make it low enough for the original front sight to be used, but a replacement fine gold bead is inexpensive and just get one slightly taller. I have had to do that on a couple Rossi guns, but I prefer the gold bead to their 'patridge' type front sights anyway.

There are some other options and aperture sights I have on this thread - https://www.levergunscommunity.org/view ... 74#p390174

You're going to want to check out these Ghost Rings w/fibre optic front.
Some don't understand how ghost rings are properly used, but I can tell you than my 336 and medium sized Firesight would shoot into under a half inch at fifty yards.

Buy and use a cheap Williams 5D peep sight until you find a reasonably price steel Lyman or Redfield.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

I just think that would be very frustrating and you should just send me the TEXAN, so you don't have to look at it without the rear sight you really want. I know I am a giver!

You've gotten some good suggestions. Mine would be to hunt up a vintage Lyman or Redfield -- can be a bit pricey, but lots of class.. Whatever you choose, though, be aware that many folks (me included) do find that a receiver sight will require a higher front sight.

On my 71 336 with front sight ramp I had to use a taller front sight with a Williams FP... ended up with a .500 tall sight, but one size lower would have worked... I think a .485, the sizes are on the website... From reading here over the years, most, rifles with a added receiver sight needed a taller front...just so you know...
