Odd job

Post by AmBraCol »

A man I know has an Iver Johnson 1900 Model in 32 SW which belonged to his father. They took it out of the house when his dad died and it was in rough finish condition, but mechanically about as good as one can expect for a low budget five-gun from back in the day. He also found a pill bottle of miscellaneous cartridges, none of which inspire confidence. He left it with me to give it a going over. The bore was scrubbed, then scrubbed and scrubbed again. The chambers also, but they cleaned up quicker than the bore did. The cylinder pin was cleaned and everything was lubed and reassembled.

Next up was to provide a bit of appropriate fodder. Last year when he contacted me, I sent him info on where to buy 32 SW brass which was available at the time. It is no longer. So I grabbed the old lyman case trimmer, chucked in the 32 cal guide and chucked it in the drill. 15 SWL cases were trimmed down to SW dimensions. A dose of 231 was weighed out and carefully dumped into each case. The "Perfect Powder Measure" wouldn't throw a small enough dose, hence the need for the weighing of charges. Then a 75 grain Rimrock Bullets projectile was seated and crimped into place. This resulted in 15 "cute little popper pills". Almost makes me want to go take another look at that Crackshot I saw the other day in 32 Short Centerfire...

So, now the old popper has what it takes to pop again. Not very practical, but it's nice to be able to help someone connect with their past by bringing a piece of it into functionality again.

Makes sense to me.....32 short factory ammo is widely available at gunshows.....seems like every other table had boxes for sale for $5-10.....at least it was up until I stopped attending gunshows a couple of year ago.....I have a few guns that shoot that cartridge and I considered it a waste of time to cast for it so I bought a thousand 70 grain round noses......

I use 1.5 grains of Bullseye and it chronos about what factory ammo does. I take it you probably use the same weight in 231.

It's a very accurate cartridge when shot out of the proper gun....I've had Smith lemon squeezers, a few old off name junkers and one I still have, a top break Smith from the 1880's that's like new.....shoot it all the time. Minute of 8" plate at 50-75 meters.....out of a Ruger Single Six in 32 mag., it's near minute of beer can at 100 meters.

Fun little cartridge and cheaper than 22 if you load for it.

Last year when Philadelphia had a gun buy back program they were offering $200 for handguns. We called and they said there was no limit so four of us went with 8 guns apiece (all suicide specials, most didn't even work) and got $6400 in food cards. Yep, I'll take those liberals for every dime I can squeeze out of them.

Yep, somewhere in that neighborhood, I've been going through so many different loads as I get ready for next week that numbers tend to blur together. I make sure I've got the bench cleared and only the powder and bullets I'm working with at the moment and double, triple and quadruple check the load as I set up, throw charges, seat bullets and then box and label. Loading on a single stage press is therapeutic, but it takes a while to get things done. So far I've got 32 SWL, 32 H&R Magnum and 327 Magnum for the Ruger Single Seven, 45 ACP 230 hardball for the Ruger SR1911 and am in the middle of cranking out some 158 RF FMJ for a Ruger OM Blackhawk I'll be borrowing. There was more 44 SPL in the cache than I recalled and plenty of 38 SPL, did up a batch of 35 Whelen for grins and I need to finish prepping the 30-30 brass for those heavy cast loads. In between I'm also catching up with family, doing chores and running errands. It's been a nice sort of break in the usual routine.

First read this thread title and the old and now unavailable Stanley "Odd Job" tool came to mind. Video showing the Garrett Wade clone in use: https://garrettwade.com/product/historic-odd-job
