.444 Rechamber to .44mag??

Post by Blaine »

In spite of pretty good Google Fu, all I can get is firing a .44mag in a .444.....But, that's not what I'm wondering....If it's been done, I'll bet someone here knows about it. :) (Marlin .444 rifle)

Wouldn't you have to re-barrel to do that? Since the .44 Mag is shorter. Perhaps some lifter and/or cartridge guide work?

Has anyone with a .444 on this forum tried cycling a .44 Mag in their .444?

Out There in gunland, they say it will fire, but the case might come apart.

One day on the range I see Paco standing there firing his .444 but the loads are REALLY light. I walk over and lo and behold! He is shooting .44-40's in the .444! He told me, look up the cartridge and chamber drawings that SAAMI puts out. The 44-40 is closer to the proper diameter to seal the chamber than the 44 Magnum is. Plus, less pressure. Those .440-40's were coming out of the chamber looking good!

I haven’t done that, but I have fired 444 Marlin and a 45-70. Kind of hard on the cases...

You would have to pull the barrel, cut off the chamber end, turn a new shank, thread it, cut extractor groove, chamber it, fill/ cut new hanger. Could it be done sure but just buy a 44 mag rifle.
As for shooting a 44 mag out of a 444 sure it head spaces off the rim.

I've shot 9mm out of a 40, like Doc says- hard on brass!
