Seems to me that only 5 is barely enough.
1: A .22 lr for small game and pests.
2: A centerfire rifle in a caliber which is good for deer.
3: A Shotgun in 20 or 12 gauge. Useful for bird hunting, clay pigeons, home defense, and deer hunting.
4: A lever action in .30-30 for hunting, woods walking, trail riding, cattle protection during calving, and home defense.
5: A varmint caliber such as .223 Rem for many purposes, to include coyote killing.
6: A muzzleloader for muzzleloader season.

That list would be a start. Then again, there are people who need other guns. Some are special purpose guns, but special purposes are truly needs for some.

Your Great Aunt is only a couple of years older than my Dad. Folks who lived through the Great Depression and the Dustbowl were not very willing to spend on ammunition. They looked at it as wasteful.

My Dad grew up during the Great Depression and spent most of what he made on ammunition or components to load it. He shot all the time and wore his guns all the time during the '30's and early 40's. My Grandpa thought he was wasting his money but Dad was determined to be a good pistol shot. And was. Things weren't so different as we might imagine. Like then, a lot of folks now have guns. Very few shoot them every week, let alone every month.

Grandpa would not waste a .22 bullet to kill a big hog at the first good cold snap. He wacked em with a big ball peen hammer. They only had a .22 and a shotgun, Dad never shot a center fire till he joined the Army, there were very very few deer to shoot due to screw worm infestation. Seeing a deer was a rare and exciting thing then in West Texas in the 40's.

In this day and age, the first question that needs to be answered what is really considered to be "Normal Person"??? After that, then it can be broken down further. Maybe this question gets too deep? :?

My dad doesn't understand my need to shoot regularly. But he has gotten used to it becasue it keeps me coming out to the ranch every weekend. It's a rare weekend that I don't fire 100-200 rounds of centerfire ammunition and I don't keep track of the .22 ammo I fire. But I am a pretty fair hand with a pistol, and I'm considered quite good with a rifle. (But my circle of friends may not be up to par with some circles.)

My dad was born in 1904, and was a young man during the depression, and lucky to have a job and missed no work then. But he did hunt, but only shot for meat, not for fun. He said he always felt irritated with himself if he fired even a .22LR at a rabbit and didn't bring home that rabbit. He usually only took whatever number of rounds he wanted for rabbit, and never took extras to account for misses. And usually brought home an equal number of rabbits too.

Yes - thats a good guideline --- personally i dont hunt anymore

so i will post my list based off yours

1. 22 lr (mine is a 10/22 Target with a 5-15 scope - the small game and pests at 150 yards are in trouble)
2. Centerfire rifle good for deer (if im starving i may have to hunt ) HK 91 or FAL or M14 or Garand pattern rifle -- also satisies the service rifle category
3. Shotgun with extended mag tube for potential defense use and both a 20" barrel with rifle sights and a 28" barrel
4. 30-30 lever action -- because this is Leverguns.com - and its mandatory - also good for deer obviously
5. Varmint caliber - an AR-15 fits the bill and plenty of magazines
6. .357 magnum revolver (i'll cheat and say a Dan Wesson pistil package with all barrels )

Streetstar is right. A handgun is necessary. A good .357 Magnum revolver is pretty close to a do all pistol. As I said above, special purpose calibers can be a real need. In Bear Country, I would think a .44 Magnum would be more effective. For some folks in Jackrabbit Country, a .22 LR or .22 Magnum revolver could be needed. The Jackrabbits can eat a lot of the plants in a Farmer's field. Before enclosed cabs with A/C and heating became common, the Farmers I knew while I was a kid would often have a .22 on their tractor or combine. Jackrabbits and coyotes learned to stay away or they got shot.

I thought that number was just for handguns! Still doesn't cover it though, triple that for long guns and we have a good start.
Paired down to minimum, as much as I'd hate to;

.44 Magnum Super Blackhawk and a Marlin 94P/.44 Mag.
.45 ACP National Match/ Springfield M1A.
.357 Magnum S&W 327 TRR8 / Marlin .357 94 carbine.
Model 12, 20 ga./ 870 12 ga.
Ruger MKII 22lr/ Marlin 39
S&W 9mm M&P/1903 Springfield sporterized .30-06
Ruger Bisley .45 Convertible/ Marlin LTDIII .45-70

Best I can do.
