Pocket Reloading Kit by Allen Taylor

Post by JimT »

We were cleaning out a gun safe not too long ago, in preparation of moving it to a new location. Among the stuff we discovered ... things we forgot was in there which includes a pistol we had been missing for several years .. was two pocket reloading kits that my Dad made years ago. One is in .38/.357 and one in .44 caliber. To make the kit complete all that is needed is something to use for a depriming punch and a powder scoop. Oh .. some pliers to hold the mold as it heated up would be helpful. :D

These were designed around his "Slip-In" bullet. Using this bullet the cartridge cases, once fired in your gun, never needed to be resized, neck expanded or crimped. Case life is indefinite. These are strictly for practice, short-range loads. Loaded at 500 to 600 fps they made excellent loads for learning aerial shooting as you could catch sight of the bullet and see whether you were shooting too soon or too late.

These bullets were light for the caliber. In .38/.357 they weighed about 110 grains. As I said, intended for short-range practice. Because they were almost a "heel" type bullet, shorter cases needed to be used. In the .357 we used .38 Special cases. In the .38 Special we used .38 Long Colt cases. In the .44 Magnum, .44 Special were used. In the .44 Special we used .44 Russian cases.

The front band on the bullet butted close to the step in the chamber. It was the same OD as the cartridge. This acted like a crimp and kept the light loads of powder from "pooping."

As a teenager I shot many thousands of these, practicing aerial shooting, fast draw, shooting moving targets, shooting from moving cars etc. Great fun!

Very interesting. Having fun like that was probably a great way to spend some time.

He was pretty much self-taught. Grandpa was a blacksmith and he learned that when young. Then read books and practiced. When I was young he had a gunsmithing business. He repaired guns. He built guns. He converted guns. He converted cap n ball Remingtons to .22 rimfire .. converted some to centerfire .. designed a single shot cap n ball target pistol .. he could run a lathe, a milling machine .. was pretty good at it.

He once built a single shot .22 miniature 1911. It was during WWII and he was working at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. He gave it to his CO who was so tickled with it he had it all engraved.

He developed quite a few things .. patented some of them .. gave most of them away.

That's pretty nifty! The priming tool looks similar to the old Ballard priming tools sold with their guns!

There's three Ballard priming tools on the right side middle of my display case with shells sitting in them. .32-40, .38-55, and .40-70 calibers.\

I was wondering what the taper is like on the .38/357 mould?
