Too many Pheasants
Well too many cock pheasants.
Hundreds of thousands of pheasants are reared and released each year but due to the Chinese virus lockdown driven shooting in the UK was stopped.
This has resulted in a huge surplus of pheasants. This wouldn't be so bad if these survivers went on to breed in the wild, unfortunately game farm reared birds make poor parents and the habitat isn't the best for wild bird survival. One problem is the ratio of cocks to hens, too many cock birds results in hens being pestered to death and not able to sit on eggs. When I was a gamekeeper pheasants were caught up at the end of the season and used for egg production for next seasons birds, surplus cocks were culled for the freezer. The so called gamekeeper where I live has done none of this he even stopped feeding his birds when shooting was stopped. I regularly have twenty cock pheasants feeding on my wild bird food and at best only five or six hens, it's the same all over the estate, this means there is zero chance of any wild chicks survival. If I had known this was going to happen I could have put catchers in the wood and sold the birds on and made some cash....

Re: Too many Pheasants
Sorry for that lapse in sound bird management GK. Too bad we can't arrange to ship a bunch of your "fellas" over the pond to salt some of our CRP lands here.
Re: Too many Pheasants
That is a disaster waiting to happen.

Give me a couple days to get some more 28s loaded, Claro, Parker and I will gladly help thin out all those rogues roosters!
Our season ended today.

I would bring my side by side 20 gauge to help feed your population. Wild birds are high quality protein.

Re: Too many Pheasants
Luckily Nath and other "that are called rough shooters in the UK" were not affected by the ban so we could still enjoy our sport.. it was the toffs with money to burn that lost their sport.. the government thought it was too difficult to "social distance" with large groups of shooters and beaters, the gamekeepers lost their considerable tips too.
Nath has probably encountered the same situation where he lives and I'm sure has made lots of smoke and dined well...

Re: Too many Pheasants
I did a rough count, sure I missed a few in my journal and February was a total loss with 30 inches of snow but anyhow 56 in the bag,
Brutus & Bruintus would likely count for a few!

From four tower/driven shoots I’ve brought home 77 and 9 partridge . Only had partridge at one shoot this season . I’m going on the final quail deal of this season in the morning .

That is a shame. We are only now dealing with the spin-off difficulties caused by government response to the Covid pandemic.

Re: Too many Pheasants
I've known more than a few people who tried to introduce pheasants to this part of Texas. It has always been unsuccessful becasue of weather, predators.....any excuse you can name. They just won't make in the wild. But they seem to do well up north.
